SPIDER-MAN : FAR FROM HOME (2019)

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (2019)

In this one, Peter Parker and students at his school are on a trip to Europe. Peter wants to leave Spider-Man behind and his suit but ends up getting his strings pulled by none other than Nick Fury who is suddenly in control of the entire trip and where it goes. This is all due to a new enemy called the Elementals who has been getting slowed down by a mysterious new figure in the MCU known as Mysterio. One big issue is that Peter is now ready to express his love for MJ and well the timing of all this just sucks.

Let me first just say that aside from BLACK PANTHER, HEX, and ALPHA FLIGHT, I was also into SPIDER-MAN growing up and his seemingly endless list of awesome villains to fight. One of the villains I thought was the freakin coolest was Mysterio. When they introduced him, I was like “There is no freakin way Spidey can handle this dude!” So naturally going into this movie I was super excited and man does this movie deliver.

I can’t say there is anything I didn’t like about it, other than maybe the casting of Jake Gyllenhaal who I felt was perfect for NIGHTCRAWLER but seemed oddly misplaced in this one. I am getting used to the fact that Tom Holland is playing SPIDER-MAN now and the rest of the cast was fine. I also really liked how this movie played on the events of ENDGAME to create the perfect setting for a Mysterio appearance. It also didn’t use a much-feared cop-out that has plagued DC’s TV universe to get there. I am purposely avoiding details so as to not spoil the movie’s plot.

SPIDER-MAN FAR FROM HOME delivers spectacular effects and a really fun setting in contrast to the severity of the ending of ENDGAME. I guess the MCU doesn’t really have a well-thought-out plan moving forward or things have changed because the current list of movies coming out in the MCU is just a bunch of TBA announcements. It’s either that, or they are announcing a new lineup of movies at Comic-Con this year. Two installments that have been “soft”  announced and maybe even are in production are BLACK WIDOW (which also has David Harbour of STRANGER THINGS attached) and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3. Regarding this one, while not as spectacular as GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS, FAR FROM HOME is certainly a can-not-miss summer flick.
