NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (1986)

“Zombies, exploding heads, creepy crawlies, and a date for the formal…this is classic Spanky.”

If you know me you know I watch a lot of horror flicks in
October. I am not sure how I missed this in the ’80s but here is the review.
While this one could probably be best categorized in the ZOMBIE genre, it’s
really less a zombie movie than it is an alien slime creature invasion. Yeah, that’s right. As long as you have one of these slug-type creatures in your body
you will not only be good and dead but you will have an urge to go out and kill
as many random sorority girls and their boyfriends as you can find. Loaded with
top-notch practical effects for it’s time not only is this movie a cult classic
it is also just flat-out awesome.
Jason Lively (whose
acting career seemed to wrap up just 6 years later, was also Russ from NATIONAL
LAMPOONS EUROPEAN VACATION) does a great job in the title role but other
performances also stand out, (jerk) Allan Kayser, Golden Globe nominee David
Paymer (DRAG ME TO HELL, AMISTAD) and Hollywood mainstay Tom Atkins (THE FOG,
LETHAL WEAPON, HALLOWEEN III, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, CREEPSHOW).
The only knock I have on this film was some fairly poor scripting in certain scenes, while others were just freakin superb and probably Jill Whitlow in the role of Cynthia. She didn’t appear to really be trying until they gave her the flamethrower, (no, really an actual flamethrower).

Really strong points in
this one like I mentioned at the effects and one of the more original twists on
an existing horror theme not only in the ’80s but really any decade. "What is this? A homicide, or a bad B-movie?" - Ray. The friendship between J.C. and Chris is also pretty cool and their conversations remind me of actual conversations I had in high school.
If you think you are an 80’s horror buff and you haven’t seen this you can catch it on a streaming service. It would also be pretty cheap on DVD if you can find it. Even just YouTubing the preview is worth your time.

I give this classic a 7 out of 7.
