NIGHTCRAWLER (2014)
Okay, this one finally landed on the streaming queue and I
decided to watch it because all of the reviews that were coming in, saying how
great it was.
The movie covers a thief, Louis, who works his way into a TV station's good graces by obtaining footage of crimes, car accidents, fires, and things like that. The way he gets in and keeps the position is probably best left on the cutting room floor because it’s so damn ridiculous.
Anyway, Jake Gyllenhaal (who might have had a word with his parents about the spelling of his last name) delivers a stunning performance, and that alone may be worth it for someone to check this thing out. Rene Russo is also really strong in this, as Nina, in what I would say is Russo’s best performance in quite some time. Bill Paxton plays a rival photographer who is a massive jerk. Then again, Paxton has been playing a jerk in everything lately. It’s like the new thing they just really love for him to do.

Now here come the two main problems with this thing:
1. The movie’s plot can be summed up in almost less than a sentence.
2. The writing feels so Googled, that I almost swear I saw or read some of the management articles this guy was citing seemingly word for word.
If you just absolutely love the news: Run to this movie. However as artsy as it’s supposed to feel, it comes across about as boring as watching the TV screen when your cable goes out. For me, it was almost tough to watch these great performers with such a flat story that had more holes than any film I have reviewed this year.
