SPIDER-MAN :
HOMECOMING (2017)
When Spider-man finally showed up in the Marvel Cinematic
Universe (MCU) fans took notice, and one major kinda cool change was bringing
in a younger talent (Tom Holland). In addition we got a spidey costume that
looked a lot more like the costume we get in the comics, than some of the other
movies have given us.
Outside of that and a really stellar performance by Michael Keaton there wasn’t much in this movie that got me legitimately excited about the new direction. Taking the comics out of it Tom Holland has the chops to be a great Spider-man moving forward, but the first 2 installments of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN both topped this outing for me (even down to the soundtracks). The jokes were okay but most of it wasn’t Spiderman cracking me up.
The story line was good but not as good as either of the past 2. A lot of what had this story line wading through mud was the Tony Stark to Peter Parker ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING situation even to the point of calling the program on Peter’s suit “The Training-Wheels Program”. It was just a little bit too damn condescending and not how I would have liked to have seen this thing go. Having said that what we do have here is some pretty amazing action sequences, great new web gadgets, and an evenly paced race to the finish, and a little bit of intrigue regarding the future.

To be specific, “who is really Mary Jane in this?” To avoid spoilers I am not going to answer that, but the film hints and even more new territory to be uncovered. Laura Harrier as Liz was a nice touch casting wise but I think we got a bit of an overload of Jon Favreau. This movie will kill it at the box office, but it’s probably down at #4 out of the 6 Spider-man movies. This is coming from a guy who loved them all.
