MISSION IMPOSSIBLE DEAD RECKONING PART 1 (2023)
Tagline: Nope.
(Adventure, Action, A Parachute for One) [PG-13]
Our lives are the sum of our choices. And we cannot escape the past. Ethan, this mission of yours is going to cost you... dearly.
In this one a weapon like the world has never seen can only be stopped by finding its original location and a two-part key. No one person has all the information and multiple organizations and governments are after it. This mission should Ethan Hunt and his team accept it…is IMPOSSIBLE.
First off, when I first read early leaks, that we were likely getting a weak story in place of over-the-top stunts and incredible action sequences…I was pretty skeptical of that. To be honest, I haven’t felt like the story was lacking in any of the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movies. They are probably in the top 2 or 3 most consistent films series in existence and rest assured, the story in this is actually pretty credible given how far technology has come. You can probably guess what the weapon is from the trailers, but just in case you can’t, I am not going to say what it is.
What I can say is that the cast we have grown to love is all back including Rebecca Ferguson (MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL) as Ilsa. We get Simon Pegg (STAR TREK) as Benji, Ving Rhames (PULP FICTION) is back as Luther, and of course Tom Cruise (ROCK OF AGES) as Ethan Hunt, then also we get Vanessa Kirby back as The White Widow. All of them freaking crush it, but there is no letdown from the added cast which included the impeccable Hayley Atwell (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER) as Grace. The underrated Pom Klementieff (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2) as Paris. Esai Morales (Titans) as Gabriel, is probably one of the most convincing and sinister baddies the series has seen. If you see this, it will become clear why I am saying that. Shea Whigham (KONG: SKULL ISLAND) is always awesome and rounding out the newcomers Greg Tarzan Davis (TOP GUN: MAVERICK) as Degas who also plays a character that will be fun to keep our eye on.
Going into this you might want to know that it’s nearly 3 hours long but it felt like 15 minutes. I thought they ended it at the perfect time because we are getting a Part 2, but it still manages to feel like a pretty complete movie. The action is nearly nonstop but they do take time to let the plot play out. There are some unexpected events that are heart-wrenching and the movie does pull at the emotional chords if you care about these characters at all. So while the humor is ramped up, the final half of the film does start to get very serious and the stakes are every bit as high as the previews would lead you to believe. This isn’t a “blow-off” film in the series. It’s a MUST SEE.
Off set this is the movie where Tom Cruise lost is s—t on the crew doing the film over Covid 19 protocol. You can even tell in the opening “welcome” to the film that Tom at least looked a bit exhausted. Apparently, many of those involved in the film contracted Covid not once by twice while doing the film. I am guessing not the same people, but it’s understandable why Tom might have been pissed. I don’t think there is very much CGI in this film at all regarding the stunts. Actress Pom Klementieff even commented on how she got to run on a movie train. She mentions how this is just simply something they don’t let you do normally.
The effort and authenticity shine in this film and it’s definitely the best of the entire series. You read that right. This thing absolutely nails it. I love that after all these years of Ethan and his crew doing impossible missions, that almost nothing in this movie goes as expected and the opening scene is one for the ages. I am not a Tom Cruise fanboy of any of that, but the man knows how to make films that stun. This one had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I can’t wait to see it again.
If it’s not clear, this thing is a 7 out of 7. Haley and Tom definitely steal the show but everyone kills it.
