STAR TREK : INTO DARKNESS (2013)

STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS (2013)

This might piss some readers off, but even though I have seen all of the old STAR TREK films, I honestly did not care for ANY of them aside from STAR TREK NEMESIS. No I am not kidding. At some point it became an obligatory endeavor just to watch the films and somewhere in there I just stopped caring. However in 2009 JJ Abrams took over direction and we finally got a real feeling introduction to the crews orgins. This movie picks up in the middle of one of the enterprises missions and pretty much never lets up after that. I have to say as much as I loved the first Abrams entry in the series, this one tops it.

  • Most of the complaints leveled at this film strictly have to do with 1 of 3 things. Some technical problem that has nothing to do with anything. If you are worried about technical stuff, maybe you need to stop watching “science fiction” films. Just throwing that out there.
  • It's too much like the WRATH OF KHAN or doesn’t stick to the storyline. Too bad.
  • Lens flare. This I can see, but to be honest in this environment I’d rather have lens flare than some poorly lit sets with no emotion or visual intrigue. Abrams is known for this, so if you dislike it that bad, just don’t bother showing up.
The plot, yeah almost forgot to get to that. The federation archive is attacked and now Kirk and crew need to track this guy to the ends of the universe where the Klingons are to throw down. Don’t think I missed anything there. This film is just intense and beautiful in just about every way imaginable and I just don’t feel I was watching the same film that a lot of its detractors were. I am NOT going to say we don’t get some really goofy scenes in this because much like its predecessor we do, but most are just nods to the fans and elusions to the original series. I did think it was pretty funny that one of the other captains in the fleet is in charge of the USS Bradbury. This ship is actually part of the Star Trek expanded universe but does show that someone in production actually was paying attention.

Together with its full-blown action sequences, humor, and surprisingly emotional content, I really can’t give this thing any less than a 6 out of 7.
