CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (2011)
Tagline: When patriots become heroes
(Action, Adventure, Capsicle) [PG-13]
In this one, we are introduced to a scrawny little dude named
Steve Rodgers (played by Chris Evans) who wants into the army really bad. It’s
set during World War II in 1942 and Dr. Erskine recruits him for the secret
Project Rebirth because he has the humility needed to become America’s first “Super
Soldier”. Meanwhile, HYDRA is growing
more powerful after a previous experiment Dr. Erskine was forced to conduct
made Johann Schmidt into the freakin Red Skull (played to perfection by Hugo
Weaving). In the comics, The Red Skull is one of Captain America’s greatest
enemies. The Red Skull wants to use the Tesseract to power weapons that will
help him in his goal of taking over the world. So naturally, he and Captain
America don’t get along at all. At first Captain America isn’t accepted by
Colonel Phillips (played by Tommy Lee Jones) so he is recruited as an
ambassador for the War effort. He only gets in after attempting a daring rescue
of hundreds of soldiers the army had already given up on.
Captain America as a movie is pretty deep-diving into subjects such as the theater of war and very real “cut you’re losses” decisions generals have to make. It also gives a pretty solid explanation of how Captain America’s history starts back in the ’40s but is still very much alive in the modern-day. The cast aside from Evans is pretty stellar.
Hayley Atwell plays Peggy Carter and was so well-liked that she went on to appear in 4 Marvel movies thru this year, had her own Agent Carter TV series for 2 seasons, and will be doing voiceovers for Disney +’s new stream series WHAT IF…?. Sebastian Stan who plays Bucky Barnes ends up being so loved by Marvel that he appears in 6 Marvel movies and will be starring opposite Anthony Mackie (the dude from ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER) in THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER streaming series also from Disney +. So CAPTAIN AMERICA is where you get to see the dawn of these awesome characters.
The effects in this thing are simply incredible and the fact that we get a great villain and heartfelt story makes this thing stand out in the MCU even to this day. The action sequences are extremely well thought out as well. Another sinister character in the film is Toby Jones as Dr. Arnim Zola. This dude plays creepy geniuses really well and demonstrates this really well in other roles such as Dr. Jenkins in WAYWARD PINES. This origin movie is definitely not one you want to miss if you never got around to seeing it. Just some of Colonel Phillips's lines are worth the watch.
