THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008)

THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008)

I really love the way this movie starts out. We get a set of quick shots and paper headlines. Instead of boring us with yet another origin story like we got in THE HULK the un-connected 2003 version that is not part of the MCU. Instead this thing kicks right into gear and Bruce Banner (played by Edward Norton) is hiding out in Brazil at a bottle factor just minding his own damn business. Unfortunately there is an accident at his work and his blood leaks into a bottle that ends up killing a character played by Stan Lee. General ‘Thunderbolt” Ross is not freaking having that, so they go to hunt down Bruce. That’s a huge mistake. Ultimately Ross decides he needs to make a super powered soldier kinda based on the stuff Captain America took, only it’s not nearly as cool. That doesn’t work so we end up with an abomination. That character is what makes this movie so rad. Abomination is a formidable foe for the Hulk in the comics. He was actually designed by Stan Lee and Gil Cane to be rival to the Hulk.

This film does take time to develop the relationship between Betty Ross (played by Liv Tyler), and introduces us a bit more into what Banner goes though as well as his search for a cure. I think I like Mark Ruffalo better as an actor playing the Hulk, but the Hulk design in this freakin movie was the best to ever grace the screen. He’s seriously menacing.

At the box office the movie overall didn’t do that great by MCU standards, but there isn’t much to not love about this thing. It’s solid well thought out movie making. This thing includes some epic effects and one of the better finales in the MCU. One reason for that is that the villain doesn’t die. The sad part however is that we haven’t seen Abomination since. The sets and pacing are incredible, as well as the cinematography and intensity of the movie are really solid. THE INCREDIBLE HULK to this day is one of the most forgotten and under-rated movies in the MCU. The is some question as to what happened to Betty Ross, Bruce Banner’s love interest in the MCU as a whole. She is quite literally never mentioned again. Overall I have to give this movie a 6 out of 7. Unlike some of the other MCU movie, this is one I do try and make sure I watch from time to time.
