CAPTAIN MARVEL (2019)

CAPTAIN MARVEL (2019)

Tagline: Higher. Further. Faster.

(Adventure, Action, An Alien Cat) [PG-13]

You know anything about a lady blowing up a Blockbuster? Witnesses say she was dressed for laser tag.

While I have seen every MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movie that has come out since IRON MAN began it all, I haven’t felt the need to desire to write reviews for all of them. This one I did. In this one, an air force pilot named Carol Danvers ends up crashing an experimental aircraft discovered by the alien race known as the Kree. She ends up getting trained by an elite Starforce Military leader named Yon-Rogg, but she really can’t remember crap about Earth…until she ends up there again…at a freakin Blockbuster.

Overall Brie Larson steals the show in this one. Anyone complaining about her acting doesn’t realize what it means when your director tells you to play a confused, but confident maverick who wants nothing more than to destroy the Skrulls. Of course, Samuel L Jackson is solid as Nick Fury once again, and it was awesome to see Agent Coulson back played by Clark Gregg. There are several treats in here, but one was seeing Lee Pace reprise his role as a younger less “intense” Ronan. Anyway to avoid too many spoilers overall this movie is a blast from the past. Literally, in fact, it takes place before any of the other MCU movies with the exception of Captain America. So timeline wise if you were watching the series, you would start with Captain America, then watch Captain Marvel, then watch the Captain Marvel mid-credit and extended scenes after you sat through all the other movies and finally got to Infinity War. One thing I loved about this movie is that while the world does end up needing to be saved, the stakes in the movie are a lot more light-hearted and fun than some of the other MCU storylines.

Carol also ends up getting followed around by a cat named Goose which ends up factoring into something that is pretty interesting in the overall MCU arch. I don’t think this was necessary to the story but comic fans I am sure appreciated Goose showing up.

I don’t know if I can say that CAPTAIN MARVEL had the same “boom goes the dynamite” moments that WONDER WOMAN had, but it’s pretty freakin clear that CAPTAIN MARVEL isn’t showing up in time for ENDGAME just to sit on her thumbs. She is definitely the most powerful of all the current characters remaining.  Overall I really dug the interaction with all of the characters and adding Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau was a brilliant touch. This is a top 5 or 6 MCU movie for me. If you have not seen CAPTAIN MARVEL in theaters, run out and do that before seeing END GAME.  It’s worth your time and money to get the BLU-RAY when it comes out as well.

MOVIE TIP: I say this a lot but never go to a movie expecting to see a comic book or a book just because the two may share names. Also if you can avoid it, try to not stop yourself from enjoying a movie based on someone’s politics or cause. That actor or actress isn’t the only mouth that gets fed when you go see a movie. Every movie has literally hundreds of people working on it.
