THOR (2011)

THOR (2011)

Tagline : Two world's, one hero.

In this one we get introduced to Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth). Growing up aside from BLACK PANTHER, ALPHA FLIGHT and a few others, Thor was one of my favorite characters. On Asgard Thor is getting ready to be announced at the future King of Asgard, only just then before Odin (played by Anthony Hopkins) can make his announcement, alarms go off; there are intruders in the secure rooms that hold the Casket Of Ancient Writers (it’s got some ice powers). Thor gets a little arrogant and ends up getting vanished to Earth because that is where you get banished to when the pizza runs out in Asgard. Is Thor worthy of the hammer Mjolnir? Or is he just going to stay a 90’s surfer looking dude with really bad eating skills? You know the answer to this, but this movie shows you how that all plays out.

The sets in this thing are incredible and the shots with the Frost Giants (whom Asgard is about to go to war with) look amazing. There is also a really cool huge creature in this one. Chris Hemsworth is best known as Thor, but has a really diverse acting range making him more than suitable for more dramatic emotional scenes. Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman) is his budding love interest in the movie and she does a pretty decent job here. There are a few awkward moments though, where you kind of feel that Porter should be a bit more serious but seems to be playing off the way Kat Dennings took on the role of Darcy Lewis, (more on the sarcastic humorous yet guarded side). While we do see changes in Thor’s costume over the run of the MCU, his look in this origin movie is pretty freakin great.

Overall I felt Thor has a bit of an EMPIRE STRIKES BACK issue where the best most climatic scene was at the beginning of the movie ends with a less climatic scene. While this doesn’t take away from the movie as a whole, it does make it feel out of balance. Having said that, Thor is an epic movie that delivers some of the MCU’s coolest characters including Loki expertly played by Tom Hiddleston (literally one of the best freakin actors on the planet) and Heimdall (played by another one of the greatest actors there is Idris Elba). Thos is a strong 5 out of 7 for me.
