IRON MAN 2 (2010)

IRON MAN 2 (2010)

In this one Ivan Vanko (a.k.a. Whiplash played by Mickey Rourke) decides to take on IRON MAN because the Stark family are butchers in his eyes and they ruined his dad’s life. Meanwhile Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) is slowly dying due to blood toxicity caused by the arc reactor in his chest. I didn’t mention this in my IRON MAN review but basically Tony’s got a hole in his chest because he needs a permanent power (the arc reactor) source to keep a piece of shrapnel from entering his heart.  Eventually S.H.E.I.L.D. takes a more hands on approach than they did in IRON MAN and we are introduced to Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson) for the first time who is a S.H.E.I.L.D. Agent. We also get to know Lt. Col James Rhodes a bit better and he ends up spending a lot of time babysitting Tony who is kinda spinning out of control.

The scope of this one layered on top of Tony’s personal give this movie a bit more punch than some reviewers are giving it credit for. In fact of the 3 IRON MAN movie, IRON MAN 2 is the most entertaining. It somehow feels light hearted while giving us a determined and brutal villain. The pace is even and nothing about the movie feels like it shouldn’t be there. Between IRON MAN and IRON MAN 2 we do get a little confusion as to what the heck is going on with the AVENGERS INITIATIVE. There is an added scene where it sounds like Nick Fury (played by Samuel L Jackson) is going to talk to Tony about the Avengers. In the added scene after THE INCREDIBLE HULK Tony is actually talking to Thunderbolt (Ross) about the Hulk in regards to the Avengers. Then for whatever reason, at the end of IRON MAN 2, Nick Fury is saying Tony isn’t even being asked to be part of the Avengers due to the Black Widow’s report on him. Then jumping a year to THE AVENGERS the AVENGERS INITIATIVE had been shut down, but Nick Fury is putting the band together anyway. I guess it’s just proof the MCU wasn’t always as solidly coherent regarding an actual plan as it is now. One thing I do wish about IRON MAN 2 is that we would have gotten more of the “full-suit” Whiplash than we got. What was good about the movie is that the full suit Whiplash we did get looked vastly superior to the comics version where in a lot of cases one of his arms is completely exposed.

IRON MAN 2 was a fantastic way to introduce fans to Black Widow and War Machine at the time, but looking back, I kind of wonder if MARVEL wishes they had just gone ahead and made a Black Widow solo movie then, so they could be making a second film in the series by now. Fortunately for Black Widow her solo movie is coming out soon. War Machine however…. it seems that may be a character the MCU leaves behind moving forward…unless they are going to bring the character back in a Disney + Show.

For the sheer fun of it, IRON MAN 2 gets a solid 5 out of 7. When going back to the IRON MAN series, it’s always the first movie of the 3 that I choose to watch.
