KONG: SKULL ISLAND
(2017)
Monsters exist and Bill Randa (played by John Goodman) is
out to prove it. Ultimately he convinces the U.S. Government to fund a trip to
SKULL island a South Pacific paradise (full of monsters apparently). The Government
just freakin loves monsters, so they are like… “Monsters, we’ll be right there,
how many soldiers do you need? Bill, Captain Marvel (actually Brie Larson as
Mason Weaver), and Loki (actually Tom Hiddleston as James Conrad) join a few
other scientists just going for “geological reasons” and we are off to the
races. 70’s music blaring against an island sunset and the whole thing just
comes together. Well until a giant freaking gorilla by the name of KONG has
something to say about it.
The freakin first 20 minutes of this thing are just amazing.
Much of the rest of the film carries heavy suspense and mystery, as the team
tries to escape the island alive encountering so much danger it’s kind of hard
to imagine anyone even lives there. I guess the rent is like ridiculously low.
Hiddleston is great in his role and I already pretty much
bought into Brie Larson’s acting when SCOTT PILGRIM came out. Having said that,
this movie isn’t entirely reliant on its stellar cast, we are treated to an
absolutely wonderful script as well. I didn’t realize how epic this movie was
until the 2nd watch, and I already loved it the first time. I think
my very very short review on my social media account was that the movie was “Mind
Blowing”. I think that even more so now. It doesn’t feel like a setup by any
means. This is a complete movie on its own that flows into the LEGENDARY MONSTER UNIVERSE seamlessly.
This movie is also plagued with brilliant monster designs and really cool encounters between them and the humans in the movie. There are some very small details in this movie where we have to consider off-screen events that may have been taking place, but it is hardly the brainless popcorn movie that some claim. It’s actually quite brilliant even without the KONG-sized spectacle. You do actually have to pay attention to the dialog to see that side of it though.
SKULL ISLAND gets a solid 7 out of 7 .
