This is one of those movies I am 99% sure I’ve already written a review for, but for some reason, here we are with no review done, so maybe that was a dream. Anyway, in this one, Scott Pilgrim (played by Michael Cera) plays bass in a band called Sex-Bob-Omb and he’s trying to impress his new high school girlfriend Knives Chau. Knives (played by Ellen Wong), is five years younger than Scott which gets him a lot of flack from his roommate Wallace (played by Kieran Culkin) and sister Stacey (played by Anna Kendrick). Scott has a dream about a girl named Romana Flowers (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and ends up running into her at a party. Scott and Romana hit it off a bit and now he’s decided to fight her evil exes in order to win her heart. Oh yeah…and Knives is still dating him, sooo… attack hug!!
Scott Pilgrim is based on graphic novels by Canadian author and artist Bryan Lee O'Malle. As such it is shot a lot like the comic would be presented and this just makes this damn movie epic. We have mind-blowing retro video game like fights, cool animated pop-ups, and some really cool imagination all coming together to make this a one-of-a-kind experience. The acting is over-the-top wonderful and the cast features 4 actors that ended up becoming superheroes on screen later on as well as 1 that had already been a superhero. The cinematography and sets are pretty cool but the editing feels choppy which is probably on purpose to make the scene transitions feel more like comic book panels.
I can’t say enough about how much I love this movie. For many years after it came out, it was still featured on various movie screens for showings in certain cities. It has a massive cult following and that is well deserved. Sadly the movie flopped hard at the box office and that is likely what cost us getting to see any more installments in a possible series. Just the recent 10-year anniversary table reading of the script garnered 250,000 views in its first 5 days on Youtube. I will say there is probably a little bit too much focus on Scott’s apartment and his roommate that could have been used to focus on the band. Those scenes do provide Scott with direction in life, as well as one of the scenes with his sister where she is actually being a sister to Scott. I think I just wanted to see the band more because they were actually awesome. For the band….for the band….for the band….
I have to give SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD an easy 7 out of 7 without reservation. As for that list of actors and actresses that would later play heroes…. Chris Evans (CAPTAIN AMERICA, The Flame), Brie Larson (CAPTAIN MARVEL), Brandon Routh (Superman, DYLAN DOG, The Atom), and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Huntress). It’s possible there are more, these are just the major roles. At one point Anna Kendrick was rumored to be playing “Squirrel Girl” but that didn’t end up panning out. Or at least it hasn’t as of the writing of this review. Thomas Jane also has a small role in this movie, but he played a bit of a hero as the Punisher back in 2004.
