DYLAN DOG : DEAD OF
NIGHT (2010)
This movie caught my eye back in 2010, much like just about anything promising werewolves, zombies and vampires. Based on the classic 2nd most popular Italian comic book ever, DYLAN DOG had a lot to live up to. This movie was made around the time that Brandon Routh was trying to recover from SUPER MAN RETURNS and probably dreaming about his small role as one of the evil X’s in SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD. That right, it took him 4 years to recover (and we are all still working on it) jk. Anyway the film starts out decent enough and gets wilder and wilder as it goes.
DYLAN DOG would have been fine as an intro given it’s excessive dialog and long portions of what passed as dialog in the comic, but to American’s just felt like un-necessary filler. Sam Huntington plays a sidekick named Marcus basically invented for the movie (because the studio was worried about using DYLAN DOG’s real side kick from the comic who calls himself Groucho Marx) who provides some pretty great comic relief. The makeup and effects in this one are good enough to side step the B-Movie status associated with films like this that are not on huge budgets, but it is not epic.

As much as I love films of this nature I can’t in good faith
recommend “running” to this movie. You can stream it on Netflix but given the
box office numbers, we can’t expect a follow up any time soon. In fact the last
attempt at this was back in 1994 (19 years before this review was written in
case you are counting) in a film called CEMETARY MAN which got better reception
but was largely forgotten until this came out.
For something a little different but not quite as well executed as it could
have been , I give this one a 3 out of 7. Which is disappointing as a fan of
these types of movies and certainly based on my expectation .
