SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED : SEASON 2 EPISODE 18 – DANCE OF THE UNDEAD

SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED :

SEASON 2 EPISODE 18 –  DANCE OF THE UNDEAD

[Animation, Adventure, Comedy]

In this episode, a zombie band called “Rude Boy And The Skatastics” that died in a plane crash takes over a venue and their songs turn all the people that showed up into dancing soulless goons. I am guessing this is one of the few places still open after the Chen’s Coffee and The Bloody Steak were and likely a lot of other places were destroyed in the last episode. If the condition can’t be reversed in 24 hours they will turn into full-blown zombies (at least according to the Crystal Cove medical community). Can Scooby and the gang with the help of another local band the “HEX girls” solve the riddle of how this is happening before the whole town is zombified?

Quick note, this episode might have been better titled “THE NIGHT SKA DIED” but I am sure that would have pissed off a lot of SKA fans.

Fact – Scooby-Doo and Shaggy have zero problem just ripping on guitar in case you ever want to hire him for your animated band.

Second Fact –  Shaggy is tone-deaf. So even though he has favorite bands he seems to not really have an acute idea of how they sound.

Third Fact – I am guessing that not all Scooby-Doo fans were down with the new look for the HEX Girls in IN FEAR OF THE PHANTOM, so they mention in this episode that they have returned to their original outfits from SCOOBY-DOO: AND THE WITCH’S GHOST. With that said, the band still ends up featuring two different outfits in the episode.

Oddity – Shaggy and Scooby break pretty much all of the HEX girls' music equipment and their speakers and nothing gets said about it.

Best Line – Why can’t anything stay dead around here? – Scooby-Doo

Second Best Line – Oh, don’t be such a Muppet Martha Quinn – Rude Boy

One cool thing about this episode is that former MTV video DJ Martha Quinn is in it. For those of you that don’t know, MTV used to have these things called music videos and they played them all day long. It was like visual radio. I know some people say this is a myth, but it’s not, it’s a real thing that happened. There is also a really cool nod to SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD during a band battle between the zombie SKA band and the HEX girls. This is also the second episode in the series that pays homage to the movie WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS via a subtle short scene with a song from the movie. The first episode was BATTLE OF THE HUMUNGONAUTS.

This is another great outing with a cool villain. Overall I have to give this one a 7 out of 7. The pop-culture nods put this over the top but we also got a pretty cool story that didn’t overly focus on the larger story arc. In case you haven’t noticed, while I do like that we got an overall 2 season mystery here, I am always more of a fan of the formulaic stuff I grew up with, Scooby-Doo and the gang doing ridiculous stuff and solving mysteries. I am giving the fact that this episode was fairly predictable as to who the villain was a pass, because it was still very well executed.
