SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED : SEASON 1 EPISODE 9 – BATTLE OF THE HUMUNGONAUTS

SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED :
SEASON 1 EPISODE 9 –  BATTLE OF THE HUMUNGONAUTS

A pair of brutal giant green and red begin destroying crystal cove (it’s seriously like a Christmas-themed disaster-o-thon) and the town's leadership kinda loves it. Elsewhere the gang is not getting along well and decides that uniforms will help them feel more unified. This episode for a lot of people got lower star ratings than almost any other episode to this point. This probably had to do with the fact that it’s another episode where there is friction and drama in the group. Scooby is even more upset than usual at Shaggy because he caught Daphne and Shaggy kissing behind the bushes. Yeah, stuff like that happens in this series. Daphne and Fred are getting along, but not as well as Daphne would like. The team actually ends up seeking out the help of Sheriff Stone, who just ends up telling them to break up and move far away from one another.

The episode itself outside of the relationships is pretty great. The motives actually feel pretty life-like even though, we do have two giant monsters battling it out in this one. The two monsters are clearly patterned after the pair of creatures in TOHO's “The War of the Gargantuas” 66’. With the episode serving as a love letter to that movie. TOHO as you may know is most famous for being the creators of Godzilla.

Oddity – A few times they seem shocked that one of Fred’s traps actually worked. However, his traps work in earlier episodes so I am not sure why this came up.

The Good – At the end of the episode the team ditches the short-lived uniforms. They also decide to officially call themselves Mystery Inc. The motive for the villains in this one is also pretty solid.

The Bad – This isn't the last time we hear the song “The Words Get Stuck In My Throat” in an episode.

I liked the villains in this one too much to give it a lower score than a 5, but I can see why some didn’t like the episode. For me, a bit of drama actually added to this series overall, almost on a genius level, but this episode like the last one did pile a bunch into its 23 minute running time.
