SEASON 1 EPISODE 8 – THE GRASP OF THE GNOME

In this one, the gang is visiting a Renaissance Festival that is starting to be plagued by the attendance of people dressing up as pirates. A sinister gnome has decided to take matters into his own glowing hands paralyzing every pirate it runs into. Meanwhile Velma is growing increasingly dissatisfied with Shaggy and Daphne is wearing a giant purple cone hat.

I like this episode, but it’s not one of my favorites. Shaggy and Scooby are getting along again, bonding over being pirates. This one also starts out with the same couple getting attacked that Episode 4 did in what ends up becoming kind of an ongoing theme in the series.

This is also the episode where Velma finally reveals that she is dating Shaggy, but I don’t consider this a spoiler at this point since this is established in the first episode of the series.

Fact - This first time in this series that Daphne is referred to by Velma as “Danger Prone Daphne”. The term was first used in the first Scooby Doo series “Scooby Doo Where Are You?” 69’.

The only downers for this one are the gnome as the villain seeming a bit out of place overall and Velma becoming overly weird about Shaggy. I do like the paralyzing power and the method by which he does it though, so there isn’t much to complain about but this one does lack some of the punch from earlier episodes.
