I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997)

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997)

Tagline: If you're going to bury the truth, make sure it stays buried.

(Horror, Slasher, What Are You Waiting For?) [R]

Oh, you got a letter? I got run over! Helen gets her hair chopped off, Julie gets a body in her trunk, and you get a letter? That's balanced!

This movie follows in the footsteps of SCREAM (same writer and everything) with some ridiculously clever dialog and its own share of great 90s stars (actually some of them still rock it today). I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is about four teenagers trying to cover up the accidental hitting of a fisherman with their vehicle (yeah eerily similar to the premise for PRETTY LITTLE LIARS). Jennifer Love Hewitt plays Julie and is definitely no stranger to the screen by now to perfection (because of her amazing over-reactions and freaking out) and the rest of the cast just does awesome stuff all throughout this movie. Oh, they think he is dead and dump him into the freakin ocean. Apparently, he wasn’t completely dead (he’s more like pissed and his face is all jacked up, just not as jacked up as Victor’s from the HATCHET movies).

Great things about this movie.

1) The acting is superb. These are all young stars at the top of their game.

2) Soundtracks made a bit of a comeback in the late ’90s, the soundtrack in the movie is great right from the opening “Am I watching THE LOST BOYS?” sequence but dies out in quality as the movie goes on.

3) Johnny Galecki plays a jerk in this movie. Just in case you were wondering what happened to David from the TV show ROSANNE.

4) Fishermen will chase you down man, with hooks and all that.

5) Apparently near death by car and near drowning recovery time is approximately 1 year. I guess it takes that long to get back in shape for all the revenge.

Oddities – Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character gets called “ugly”, and “looks like death” in this movie and gets yelled at like every 5 minutes oh yeah, and asked if she is on drugs. The slasher in this movie wins the “best handwriting for a slasher” award.

Overall this movie is just flat-out fantastic fun and plays even better now in my eyes than when it came out. I give this movie a 6 out of 7.
