THE LOST BOYS (1987)

THE LOST BOYS (1987)

Tagline: Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire.

(Horror, Comedy, Great! The Bloodsucking Brady Bunch!) [R]

I think I should warn you all, when a vampire bites it, it's never a pretty sight. No two bloodsuckers go the same way. Some yell and scream, some go quietly, some explode, some implode, but all will try to take you with them.

In this one, Lucy is looking to start over with her two sons Sam (Corey Haim) and Michael (Jason Patric), so they move from Phoenix to Santa Clara, California. As Sam and Michael adjust, Micheal gets in with a group of homicidal vampires led by David (Keifer Sutherland). Sam on the other hand meets the Frog brothers in a comic shop. Both have very particular skills in vampire extermination. It doesn't take long before both sides collide.

THE LOST BOYS is one of the top 5 vampire movies of all time. In my opinion, if you make a vampire film at all you need to watch this for instructions.
After watching this movie about 700 times it has finally occurred to me that I missed quite a few things that have not only made the movie MORE enjoyable but that are pretty freakin comical.

1- The movie does not subscribe to the lame idea that garlic hurts or even keeps away vampires.

2- Cory Haim isn’t given a single decent shirt in the entire movie until the very last scene. Then they are like “Okay now, now you can have a decent shirt”. Don’t believe me, watch it.

3- It isn’t until the 2nd attack on the vampires that Edgar finally decides to share that if you kill a vampire it can be pretty messy and they never go out the same way, (another thing that is another really well-done thing in this movie as well as the soundtrack).

4- Cory Feldman appears in LOST BOYS: THE TRIBE (which is very subpar) and LOST BOYS: THE THIRST (which was not amazing but was pretty likable).

5- The city the main family is from is Phoenix, the same city Bella fled in the Twilight series. Oddly everyone seems to be leaving Phoenix in the movies on their way to vampires, when everyone knows Phoenix is the vampire capital of the world (Toronto is a close second).

Highly noted for its ode to the perils and horrifically sinister lusts of being a vampire, THE LOST BOYS injection of humor and violence into the genre is pretty much the standard to which all other vampire movies are measured. For this and 100 other reasons, I give THE LOST BOYS a 7 out of 7.
