SCREAM (1996)
Tagline: Someone Is Playing A Deadly Game, Someone Who Has Seen Way Too Many Scary Movies.
(Horror, Mystery, Wait What?) [R]
There are certain RULES that one must abide by in order to successfully survive a horror movie. For instance, number one: you can never have sex.

In the 90’s some
directors still held on to a more 80’s style horror film mixing some humor, a
marketable serial killer, and fairly cheesy effects and steered clear of super
realistic gore. SCREAM is the flagship of these films even though it was
released deeper into the decade than most would have probably liked. The same
writer (Kevin Williamson) wrote I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, THE FACULTY
and has also written for DAWSON’S CREEK and now THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
If that isn’t enough to check this out the cast is beyond stellar with Neve Campbell as Sidney(a very solid lead), Drew Barrymore (who should have gotten a larger role), Rose McGowan (PLANET TERROR), Courtney Cox, David Arquette and even freakin Henry Winkler.
The plot is pretty simple on the surface, someone gets a hold of a Halloween mask and starts terrorizing a college town using a really sharp knife and a cell phone, which in 1996 was apparently a pretty new invention (I honestly can’t remember, I didn’t get mine until 2011 ironically when the 4th installment came out). I wish there were a lot more of this type of horror movie out there. For clever, high suspense, plot twisting excellence look no further. I should also note that SCREAM was directed by horror master Wes Craven (not to be confused with jerk horror master Clive Barker).

There is a scene with a
janitor named Fred that I am sure most people caught at the time, but the movie
itself is loaded with subtle references to the horror clichés it’s patterned
after. SCREAM is what happens when people are trying to make smart gutsy well-acted horror films. This one also has a great soundtrack to top it all off.
