SCREAM 3 (2000)

SCREAM 3 (2000)

Tagline: Rules of a trilogy: Chapter one sets the rules. Chapter two bends the rules. But in the finale...forget the rules.

(Horror, Mystery, The Final Scream...But Not Really) [R]

Psychos can't kill what they can't find.

3 years after part 2, it was pretty inevitable that the third installment was going to come out. Judging by the cast it looks like almost everyone in Hollywood was begging to be part of the phenomenon. In SCREAM 3, the movie in the movie is getting made (STAB 3), however murders on the set and the eventual luring of Sidney (Neve Campbell) back to the area where the film is taking place.

The genius of this series almost outsmarts itself in this one. While we have established that in the series “anyone” can be “ghost face” the killer(s), you also have to provide at least some sort of connectable motive if you are going to explore reasons why the murders have to be once again related to something about Sidney. While I didn’t like the seemingly far-fetched reasons the events of part 3 were taking place, there were a lot of other things to like. This movie knows it is part of a trilogy and all of the characters know it. So we are given 3 rules.

1. The killer must be pretty much like Jason in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART II, merely stabbing or shooting will not be enough to kill the killer.

2. Anyone can die, including the main character a rule established in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART II.

and 3. The past will come back to haunt someone (pretty much a rule for part 2 also) Later in this one, Detective Mark Kincaid warns, "All I know about movie trilogies is in the third one all bets are off".

This can also translate to in the 3rd one almost everything starts to get better (part III of CHILDS PLAY was the best in my opinion, part III was also the first time Jason donned the mask and we got Dream Warriors in NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3).

The soundtrack in this one was an improvement over part II and the cast was equally stellar if not better, Carrie Fisher, Scott Foley, and Patrick Demsey have large roles, b-movie horror legend Roger Corman shows up, Jenny McCarthy, Parker Posey, both Jay and Silent Bob (who I could give a crap about) and even Joe from Family Guy Patrick Warburton (who also voices Sheriff Bronson Stone in SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INC. by a long shot the best cartoon series on the planet). It also gives us the 3 main characters from parts 1 & 2 something most horror series failed to do.

SCREAM 3 is NOT the best of the series but is the most humorous which is what probably made it harder to bring the audience to a true sense of “who is the killer” rather than a “who will make a cameo” moment.
I give this one of 4 out of 7, for the odd voice device.
