THE WALL PEOPLE (2014)

THE WALL PEOPLE (2014)

Tagline: They’re Coming For Your Children!

(Sci-Fi, Horror, Psychotronic) [PG]

Note – This movie did not originally have an MPAA rating, but I am pretty sure it would have been a PG. If you are looking to check this out, it actually comes on the double feature DVD or streaming service under the name LATE NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE and is the second half of that.

We could always make something up. "Public health risk" always seems to work.

In this one, a scientist named Barney Collins's son disappears and Barney basically has an expected mental breakdown. Years after this, Barney feels his son has been taken by a being from another dimension through his bedroom wall and has a device that can get him there. He gets the help of two friends who quickly discover, that Barney isn’t crazy.

First off, this one has a bit of stop motion in it which was affectionately created by PokeTheBear TV. This is an homage to films like 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH and THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS only on a smaller scale. Given that this is a Christopher R. Mihm film, you know you are getting low-budget sci-fi b-movie awesomeness. As part of the LATE NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE, THE WALL PEOPLE is definitely the more startling mind-twisting, TWILIGHT ZONE-ish film of the two.

Douglas Sidney does a lot of the heavy lifting acting-wise as Barney Collins and does a pretty good job in this. He’s starred in several films in the “Mihmverse” (the loosely connected film universe created by director Christopher R. Mihm) usually in quite different roles. His most famous role is probably as Cpl. John Baker in WERESQUITO: NAZI HUNTER. We also get a heavy dose of Catherine Hansen who plays Martha. Catherine has 4 “Mihmverse” films to date. She typically takes on roles where the character is duplicitous and this is no exception. Michel Cook and James Norgard round out the rest of the main cast for this and both do great jobs. James almost always plays Dr. Gabriel in the “Mihmverse” and Michael Cook almost always plays Dr. Edwards. I say almost always because there are a few exceptions.

Like most of the films Christopher R. Mihm directs, this is another black-and-white effort. To date, the only movie he’s made that is in full color is QUEEN OF SNAKES and I almost had to adjust my eyes watching that, because Mihm just doesn’t do full-color movies. No, I am not kidding. It took about a day and a half to finally get my head around why this master of 50s homage would dare make a full-color flick. Why Chris, why?

With cerebral and somewhat disturbing turns, I didn’t find this effort as enjoyable as some of the other films in the “Mihmverse” but it definitely checks all the crazy b-movie sci-fi in the 50s boxes most fans will want it to. Full of twists and turns as I mentioned earlier this plays out a bit more like a TWILIGHT ZONE or even OUTER LIMITS episode than I expected.

For the stop motion, I have to give this one at least a 4 out of 7, but the story itself was definitely not one of my favorites in the series and the execution felt a bit scattered which drops the overall film to a 3 out of 7.
