DEATH OF A UNICORN (2025)
Tagline: They're going to make a killing.
(Monster Horror, Comedy, Big Pharma Must Die) [R]
Must be moose mating season or somethin...
In this one, Elliot is taking his daughter, Ridley, to the home of a mega-rich pharmaceutical CEO's estate on a business trip to basically take over a portion of the company's affairs after the CEO (Odell Leopold) passes away. However, on the way, Elliot hits a unicorn on the road and decides to bring it with him to the estate, leading to a horrific series of events.
Okay, I am just going to come out and say it. When you look at this list of over 100 movies released by A24 since 2013, it's about 99% terrible movies. There just isn't any way around it. Clearly, this is just my opinion, but I could probably win in court if I were asked to prove it on most of them. So with that stage set, some of their movies intrigue me anyway, and DEATH OF A UNICORN is one of them. I also kind of still want to see Y2K.
The only negatives I really have for this thing are that we don't really get more than 2 or 3 likeable characters. I am not going to spoil anything by saying who they are, but most of these people, I just don't even care about them, and I am rooting for the unicorn. This is listed as a dark comedy, but it's very light on the comedy after a certain point. That is not to say it doesn't have some pretty funny situational moments. This film does have some gory scenes, but I can only guess it won't make fans of gory horror happy because it's all clearly CGI, and that actually made me like it more. I can't stand over-realistic horror. The cheesier the better.
What I liked about this movie was the acting and the cast. I usually like Paul Rudd, and that doesn't really change here regarding his performance as Elliot. Jenna Ortega is actually a great actress, even if I don't care for some of the movies she's in, and she crushes it here as Ridley. Will Poulter also puts on a fantastic performance as Shepard, even though I can't stand the character. The scenery is mind-blowing, and it actually makes me want to visit Hungary, maybe someday. The movie is supposed to take place in Canada, but it wasn't actually filmed there.
I really liked the design work, but you can tell in the close-ups that they just didn't know how to make the younger unicorn look realistic. That's actually fine with me though...Like I said, the more cheese, the better. We kind of get a WEREWOLVES WITHIN feel here, where it just doesn't take very long for complete chaos to take over. I love this kind of stuff and finally A24 didn't screw a perfectly good idea up. The script touches on aspects of family trauma, how disgusting big pharma probably really is, greed, and even eternal life and God, depending on your perspective.
I also loved that this movie wasn't overly long. It's right at an hour and 47 minutes, which is totally fine. So if you ever wanted to check out a cool creature feature that would probably be what THE ASYLUM could make if they were competent and spent money on a fantastic cast, DEATH OF A UNICORN will fit the bill. Congrats, A24, you finally made a fun movie.
I give DEATH OF A UNICORN a solid 6 OUT OF 7. Some of the scenes were unnecessary, and we already knew most of the characters were just the worst.

Legal note: No - I am not threatening big pharma, they do some good at times. The movie itself is extremely anti-big pharma.
