ONE CRAZY SUMMER (1986)

ONE CRAZY SUMMER (1986)

Tagline: They're out of school, out on Nantucket, and out of their minds. With this crowd, anything can happen!

(Comedy, Drama, Godzilla) [PG]

We can't let them walk away with everything. If we give in, we're giving in to all the cute, fuzzy bunnies in the world.

Where to start with this freakin thing? There are not many movies I remember that have John Cusack (who plays Hoops) and don’t have Joan Cusack in them, but this nutty movie is one of them. I think when I was younger this movie stood out to me for 2 reasons. 1. It had cool animation in it since the lead in the movie “Hoops” is an artist trying to find love after discovering unlike the rest of his family, he cannot play basketball ….like at all. He sucks. 2. It had Godzilla in it and any time that happens, you know I have to check it out.

Well, I just gave away a bit of the plot. Hoops is graduating, he’s got a few friends that live in Nantucket and he winds up running into Demi Moore (who plays Cassandra) who needs to try and save her family's property from developers. The plot is definitely secondary to some of the cool animated shorts in the movie, and having Bobcat Goldthwait run around like a madman in a Godzilla suit. Bobcat is still active by the way. He did the voice for Dino and Gary on Bob’s Burgers among other things. Anyway, this is one of Demi Moore’s earlier movies and she actually does okay in this. Outside of her, Bobcat, and John the rest of this cast is just okay. The direction is solid and the movie is pretty well-paced.

There are some crazy moments in this thing including a prop for a movie that involves a giant dolphin with rabies. There is a scene where Booger from “Revenge Of The Nerds” is trying to gather bomb shells off a beach while it’s getting bombed. It’s just a lot of crazy and pretty fun stuff. I don’t think this movie hit quite the nostalgia button I thought it might, but this wasn’t a movie I watched a ton of when I was younger. I may have seen it once, but I definitely never forgot about it. It’s just been pretty difficult to find on most streaming platforms. I actually had to watch this on a Ruku App called Channel 62.

This is not a movie you need to run out and buy or anything, but if you haven’t checked it out and you are looking for a little 80’s nostalgia, this thing is more fun than most. I give ONE CRAZY SUMMER a 6 out of 7. Just because it took a lot of guts to try and make the animation, Godzilla, a prop giant rabid dolphin, and the other stuff in this thing work and still manage to have a little heart injected into it.
