I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1998)

I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1998)

Tagline : Some secrets will haunt you forever.
(Horror, Mystery) [R]

Julie is NOT crazy.

In this one Julie (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt) is still having some nightmares about a Fisherman that killed a few of her friends the year before. Her best friend Karla Wilson wins free tickets to the Bahamas, and the plan it to get away and relax for once. When they get to the island they realize it’s the start of storm season, nothing going on seems right and the island is running a skeleton crew as the killings begin once more. Also Ray (played by Freddie Prince Jr.) is a bit of an idiot and decided to not go on the trip so he spends a LOT of this movie trying to figure out how to undo his mistake.

This movie has an epic opening scene and does a pretty decent job of keeping the pacing going after that. This one unlike the first movie is less of a slow burn. We already know for the most part who were are dealing with after watching the first movie. That’s the other thing. You really need to watch I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER before you watch this one in order to know more fully what is going on.

The setting, cinematography and music choices are top notch. I also love that they got several great actors in this one aside from Hewitt. Brandy Norwood is awesome as Karla (even though her character is overly bossy) and Mekhi Phifer is great as Tyrell. We also have a Jennifer Esposito sighting (probably most famous for her role on THE BOYS as Susan Rayner). This movie also does a great job of adding to the original lore of the first installment giving us a deeper more well thought out insight into the killer motives.

A few thoughts on the plot - I am glad that Jack Black started getting better roles after this movie, because he is the scariest thing on this island. I also kind of wonder who the killers cleaning service is, because that dude does not leave a trace of anything that he’s done behind. Sadly this one got a lot of hate when it came out and never hit the stride of the SCREAM series with horror fans. This installment made $25 million less than it cost to make. I actually like the first 2 installments of this series a lot and wish it had been more appreciated in its time. Also – until this movie came out, I would have also thought that the capital of Brazil was Rio. So that part of the script I loved, because I don’t think a lot of people know its capital.

On a side note, my comic DARK 30 Issue 3 is an anthology with 3 stories in it. One of the stories is EMILI KILL sub-titled "JULIA IS NOT CRAZY". That title was inspired by Julie from this movie and the fact that she is not crazy. The story lines themselves are unrelated.

Overall I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is a top tier horror flick from the 90’s and I can’t give it anything but a 7 out of 7. Several cool twists and turns made this thing even better than the original.
