I’LL ALWAYS KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (2006)

Tagline: What he knows, might kill you...

(Horror, Mystery, Things Not To Do In Colorado) [R]

Zoe, did you tell anyone?
Yeah, I wrote a song about it, but don't worry, that single's not out yet.

So back in 2000, there was a 3rd installment of this series planned with the original cast Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddy Prince Jr, and Brandy. For “x” reasons, that didn’t pan out and this movie ended up getting made in 2006 instead. Storyline this installment is only connected to the original series by the story of the Fisherman with the hook. Outside of that, we’ve got a new cast and a new series of events that lead to the revenge plot. Did we get a new fisherman?

In this one, a group of friends play a prank at a carnival and it goes terrifyingly wrong. One of their friends is killed and as a group, they decide to not report what happened to the police. One by one they are picked off as the body count rises so does the mystery behind the killer’s identity. There are several directional turns in this that keep this one pretty fun, but we've got issues.

One issue with this flick straight away is the horrible editing. We don’t get the same blue tones and lighting we got in the first two installments and the camerawork is choppy like it was shot by someone who had no clue how to film a movie. It does happen in Colorado and not by an ocean which is also odd since we’ve got a seaside-type killer. It’s kind of like having a killer Frosty The Snowman attack a tropical resort. Oh wait…that did happen in JACK FROST 2: REVENGE OF THE MUTANT KILLER SNOWMAN, so maybe that isn’t the best example. Having said that, the movie does give a reason as to how this all occurs which is actually extremely satisfying.

Acting wise this thing held its own with actresses like Torrey DeVitto playing Zoe. She is probably most famous for her role on “Pretty Little Liars” as “Melissa Hasting”, but she’s also been in “Chicago Med”, “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.”. She plays a singer in this and she’s actually pretty good. Brooke Nevin is okay in this as “Amber” and is still acting to this day. The movie also features Ben Easter (who plays Lance), who does a great job in this, but his career in acting seems to have fizzled out in 2015.

This movie fails in several areas, unfortunately, and that mostly lies in the script's inability to provide any background to the killer. While the reveal feels cool, it's also out of left field given the setting. Perhaps the mystery and, “not”, explaining things was part of trying to keep this thing creepy, but it would have given this movie depth. I did actually like what we ended up getting aside from the things I mentioned. I would have also loved to see this series get another entry or ten, but the ending is about as final as you can get. In the final scene, we do get another jump scare that the series has been noted for with each movie. These are dismissed in each new movie as a dream sequence.

For the movie's intriguing ending and some decent dialog, I have to give this a 4 out of 7. It’s not nearly as bad as some have stated once it gets going, but the director did a terrible job and some of the missing plot elements didn’t help at all. Finally, if you are going to make a movie never have someone that is not good at Photoshop do your promotional material. The poster and DVD cover for this thing were terrible.
