SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY INCORPORATED :
SEASON 2 EPISODE 14 – HEART OF EVIL
[Animation, Adventure, Comedy]
This episode features a team-up with Scooby and the gang, Dynomut and Blue Falcon trying to figure out why a dragon-man robot is terrorizing Crystal Cove.
If you are a Blue Falcon fan, I don’t know if this episode would make you angry or happy. It basically gives an origin story for both Dynomut and Blue Falcon that I don’t recall ever being told in the past.
The plot in this one is a lot more like a Johnny Quest plot than a Scooby-Doo plot, but they do a great job of mixing everything together, even having Velma and Daphne getting in on a few of the action sequences. The art overall is just okay, I did like the opening sequence. The dragon battle suit is cool, but not amazing. I recall the Dynomut character being a bit smarter in SCOOB!, which was one of the few things about that movie that improved on old characters.
Fact – This is the second episode in this series where we get a mention of Quest Laboratories. It’s also mentioned in PAWN OF SHADOWS. Destroido (Mr. E’s company) actually owns Quest Laboratories in this universe.
Second Fact – This episode gives a nod to the legendary SNL skits where Chris Farley was a motivational speaker trying to keep people from living in a “van down by the river”.
Oddity – Incredibly Fred says he’s got a shark cage in the Mystery Machine. How is that even possible? Never mind, it’s Scooby-Doo it's fine.
Best Line – Velma, he’s a superhero with a belt full of traps! – Fred.
Second Best Line – Corporate greed is another symptom of a society rotting from the inside out. – Blue Falcon.
Overall for me, this episode was successful in a few things, but not in others. I like Blue Falcon as a character, but in this episode, he was portrayed as more of a serious Bat-Man figure from the current DCU rather than a lighter but still serious Bat-Man like the ones we got in team-ups in some of the incarnations of Scooby-Doo. I did like that Daphne finally starts dropping hints she is falling back in love with Fred in this episode.
This is a 4 out of 7 just because of the attempt to switch things up with some beloved characters.
