HALLOWEEN (1978)

HALLOWEEN (1978)

Back in 1978 we would get the dawn (or rather dusk) of one of the most celebrated horror franchises in history and also one of the most successful independent films of all time. Unlike a lot of other series this one did a pretty honest job of sticking to the original timeline (outside of part III). In this one 6 year old Michael Myers kills his sister Judith and winds up getting institutionalized (even back in the 70’s killing your sister was generally not permitted). After being institutionalized till he is 21, Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween. Dr. Loomis worked with Michael while he was in the institution and has a keen suspicion that he will be basically killing everyone he sees that either gets in his way or looks like his younger sister Laurie (played by then 20 year old legend Jamie Lee Curtis who hair is complete jacked out from scene to scene in this movie). Unfortunately over the years, or fortunately over the years, depending on who you ask, this series has become a choose your own adventure situation.

Epic things about this movie –

1) When Halloween rolls around the soundtrack for this movie is so eerie, it is probably your ring tone for half the month.

2) Jamie Lee Curtis. Even back in the day she could actually act bringing instant credibility to this film opposite Donald Pleasence (who delivered in spades adding to what wound up being one of the most stellar horror movie casts ever).

3) He doesn’t die. Michael is tough as nails possessing a supernatural strength from the start of the series (unlike Jason who we really didn’t know was supernatural until around part VI (some might say IV)).

4) There are a lot of slasher movies out there and I consider them true horror, however this film brought about terror that left a lasting impression on not just the horror genre but society as a whole.

5) William Shatner wasn’t in the film but in case you didn’t know, the mask Michael wears in the film is a Captain Kirk mask painted bluish white and messed with a little especially the hair.

6) The cinematography was top notch.

Not so epic things about this movie – Some parts of the film feel a little slow and probably don’t have newer fans jumping out of their seats.

I give HALLOWEEN a solid 6 out of 7.
