SEASON 2 EPISODE 15 – THEATER OF DOOM

The gang is asked for help by Vincent Van Ghoul. Scooby-Doo and Shaggy are massive fans of his horror features, so the gang decides to step in. They quickly discover that an old Franciscan Friar is haunting the production of a play that commemorates the history of Crystal Cove. Can the gang find out why the show must not go on?

This one is pretty great story-wise. They bring back Mr. Avacodos for another episode and also Vincent Van Ghoul (probably one of my favorite characters in the entire series aside from Hotdog Water). They do wrap up the mystery pretty quickly via the use of a montage to speed up the storyline, but it’s well done. This is another episode that goes into the background of the overall mystery arc.

Fact – There is a fantastic nod to the Vincent Price narration of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in this episode. It’s not exact, but it’s pretty epic. Vincent Van Ghoul who is the Vincent Price figure is voiced by Maurice LaMarche who also voices “The Brain” from “Pinky & The Brain”.

Second Fact – This one involves a donkey that tries to destroy the town. That is all I am going to say about that.

Oddity – Apparently the mummy of a friar looks nothing like a mummy. They just look like ghostly friars.

Best Line – No, stay away, I should never have transferred my dead wife’s brain into an earthworm! – Vincent Van Ghoul

Some of my favorite episodes in this series are whenever Vincent Van Ghoul shows up. This is no exception. I thought the artwork was pretty strong. The designs were simple but super effective. This one gets a 5 out of 7 because they do give you enough of the Avacodos background to make his part in the story fun.
