SEASON 2 EPISODE 7 –  THE GATHERING GLOOM

In this one Mayor Nettles decides to have a big movie night in the town graveyard featuring Vincent Van Ghoul. During the movie, an actual ghoul attacks the audience trying to scare everyone off. Meanwhile, we get some background on Mr. E (voiced by Lewis Black) and Professor Pericles (voiced by Udo Kier) as part of the larger 2 season-long story arc. Can the gang solve this mystery before any future gave-yard movie nights are ruined?

One thing I’ve noticed about this season is that there have been at least 2 houses that have suddenly appeared in Crystal Cove that were either not there or seemingly not there in Season 1.  This is also an episode where just Scooby and Velma do 95% of the sleuthing, and running and freaking out. 

Art wise I kind of love this episode. Having a ghoul as the villain isn’t really that new, but I am a fan of any episode that incorporates Vincent Van Ghoul (voiced by Maurice LaMarche). Story-wise however this one is pretty mediocre. The pacing is good, but I think the restoration of Mr. E and Pericles relationship seemed a bit off. 

Fact – In this episode, Scooby-Doo is dating a dog named Nova. 

Second Fact – Nova is not intimidated by ghouls. She literally just does not care, she just stands her ground and barks at them. 

Third Fact – Chocolate makes Daphne go crazy. She basically gets massively crazy-eyed and breaks out. 

Best Line – Like, I really hope that is not the only thing it could be! – Shaggy. 

Overall this episode is pretty fun and I love that they got back to basics with the whole gang getting back together and getting along well. Even Scooby seems to have let bygones be bygones in regards to his jealousy of Velma. I give this one a solid 4 out of 7. The mystery could have used a bit more innovation.
