GOOSEBUMPS (2015)

GOOSEBUMPS (2015)

In this one Zach Cooper (played by Dylan Minnette) meets this girl next door (Hanna played by Odeya Rush) who almost immediately starts flirting with him. Only she’s got a huge problem. Her father is famed “Goosebumps” author R. L. Stine (played by Jack Black), which is pretty awesome, because that also happens to be the title of this movie. Stine is not down with his new neighbors or anyone doing anything with is daughter. With the help of his really new friend Champ, (played by Ryan Lee from SUPER 8) the two decided to try and protect Hanna, who Zack thinks might be getting the full blown FRIGHT NIGHT treatment from her father. Zack ends up unintentionally unleashing the monsters from Steins original writings after basically breaking into Stein’s house. The beasts of Steins imagination become real and start to terrorize the town all lead by the sinister dummy “Slappy”. There is a way to get these creatures back into the books, but it’s going to take a crap load of running and freaking out to accomplish.

Overall I love the way this movie plays out and the characters are all extremely likable by the time this thing is completed. Strong points in this movie are the solid performances out of Dylan Minnette and Jack Black voicing “Slappy” who kind of steals the show. Ryan Lee is also fantastic as Champ, but I think I liked him slightly better in SUPER 8. Another thing I loved about this movie were the really strong special effects overall, but particularly on the giant praying mantis. I mean, it’s freakin incredible. Perhaps the fur and design of the werewolf could have been better, but these are minor details in an otherwise brilliantly executed movie.

Normally I have a complaint or two, but I really can’t find any flaws with this flick. It’s one of my favorite Halloween type flicks that I now have watched for 4 Halloween marathons in a row. One interesting tid-bit from the movie that I actually had to look up was when Stein’s character says he’s sold more books than Stephen King. This in fact is true as shocking as it sounds. Stein has sold something in the neighborhood of 50 million more books than King.

I have to give GOOSEBUMPS a 7 out of 7. It’s one of my favorite movies ever. Probably in the top 100. I do wish the follow up had included the 2 main actors from this movie and more Jack Black, but if you read my rating on that thing, what we did end up with was mind blowing in its own right.
