Admittedly, I pretty much loved the first installment in
this series and was pretty bummed when this one ended up in development hell
for so long. When things finally got going it was unclear if Jack Black was
going to reprise his role as R.L. Stine (Oddly enough R.L. Stine writer of the
Goosebumps books actually shows up in this also as Principal Harrison, Science
Award Presenter). Fortunately, everything worked out and what we ended up with
is the best kids Halloween movie in probably 2 decades. No, I am not kidding.
This thing is just freakin wonderful.
Based around a couple of kids who end up opening a magic book that brings dummy “Slappy” to life Goosebumps 2 is loaded with action, heart, laughs and writing brilliance. We also get to see a few of the cool characters the first installment introduced. Standouts from the cast include Jeremy Ray Taylor (who will be a huge star someday) and Goldberg’s actress Wendi McLendon-Covey as well as Madison Iseman (Jumanji). Goosebumps 2 is also a bit spookier than the first installment especially as the pace picks up towards the ending. Damn, I can’t even say how much I loved this thing. I can’t wait to get it on BLU-RAY or even make another trip to the theater to catch it again.
With dazzling special effects and really cool surprises all the way through, your kids won’t be the only ones to have a blast. In a world where everything is just too serious or too goofy, Goosebumps 2 hits the right cord on every possible level. I also have to give a hat off to Mick Wingert as the voice of “Slappy” in this one. He’s got a rare talent for creepy in the vein of the Crypt Keeper. This one is a solid 7 out of 7 for me. I was extremely surprised.
