FRIGHT NIGHT (1985)
Tagline: If you love being scared, it'll be the night of your life.
(Horror, Vampires, What Is Going On With Amy's Teeth?) [R]
If you don’t help, Amy’s
going to die, me too probably.
When this came out, to be honest, I just skipped it. In spite of the great cover artwork and the title, I managed to walk right by it probably a hundred times. With the new FRIGHT NIGHT coming out a friend and I were talking and I wound up buying this in 2012. After seeing it, I wasn’t shocked it was the 2nd highest grossing horror film in 1985.
In this one Charley
Brewster is watching the TV show FRIGHT NIGHT (which by the way has like the
coolest intro ever (just a creepy voice squealing “fright night”). Some new
neighbors move in next door and it doesn’t take Charley long to realize they
are bloodsucking creatures of the night. His awesome solution to the problem is
to get the host of the show FRIGHT NIGHT Peter Vincent (Vampire Killer) to take
on the real life role of killing his vampire neighbor.
There are a lot of great
things about this movie including the ridiculous over the top vampire effects.
I am talking teeth all jacked out, face all deformed, eyes blood red. This
isn’t freakin TWILIGHT. We also get some decent performances even by the cops,
but that doesn’t mean there are not some casting mistakes in my opinion (Amy played by Amanda Bearse, better known as Marcy from "Married With Children" and Evil Ed played by Stephen Geoffreys, for example). Chris Saradon (who also shows up in CHILD’S PLAY)
stands out as our vampire in this and just brings that much more credibility to
the film.
This movie does have it's issues. Some of the scenes take way to long and the set up seems like it could have just been a different movie entirely. The
soundtrack in this thing sucked, and that is kinda sad for someone who likes
80’s music. With RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD and HOWLING II coming out that same
year, there was simply no excuse the music dude could not have done a LOT
better. Evil Ed, I honestly couldn’t wait for this character to die.
Overall this movie brings
back memories concerning 80’s horror, but it doesn’t stand up to a
lot of other stuff that came around the same time.
