RETURN
OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985)
Tagline: They're Back From The Grave and Ready To Party!
(Comedy, Horror, Send More Paramedics) [R]
I try not too think about dying too much.
I honestly think Dan O’Bannon
is more of a genius when it comes to zombies than Romero. Why? (I know you were
either asking “why” or getting pissed in your head). It’s because if you are
dead, technically your brain is dead. So simply giving a zombie a sharp blow to
the head should almost NEVER work. A chemical doesn’t need the brain to work in
your body. Dan apparently got all this because the zombies in this movie just
flat-out don’t die. Even the body parts will keep coming after you (I call them
smart parts).
Anyway, this classic starts out at a medical facility where a canister is opened and starts to bring everything dead in the facility to life. After a comedy of errors the chemical gets into a nearby gravesite and all the dead start coming back to life. Awesomely they want one thing…your BRAAINNSSSS. The effects in this are pretty decent, but not mind-blowing.

Great stuff about this
movie.
1) Everyone in the thing is doing a freaking fantastic job acting. From mega-over-the-top reactions to one dude who is so mellow he doesn’t even appear to know he’s being filmed.
2) The zombies talk. We don’t get many zombies talking these days. In this thing the zombies not only talk, they pretty much lay out their plan so that you can attempt to make your next move.
3) The soundtrack. Okay so if you know me and my review I think soundtracks are HUGE. This movie is in my top 5 favorite soundtracks of all time. There is a “DO YOU WANNA PARTY” scene in this flick so iconic it should be the opening for every concert ever…like just queue that sucker up.

Not so great stuff. For
this movie, there really isn’t anything that sucks, but some would say the
ending wasn’t great.
Stuff you may have
missed. There are two main characters named Burt and Ernie which is epic and
when Thom Mathews isn’t slowly becoming a zombie, he is chasing down Jason
circa JASON LIVES FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI. I give this movie a 7 out
of 7, to this day there simply isn’t a zombie movie that has even come close to
how great this is.
