THE WOLVERINE (2013)

THE WOLVERINE (2013)

For fans of the Hugh Jackman take on WOLVERINE, the last few appearances have been a huge disappointment. I personally didn’t hate X-MEN ORIGINS or his brief appearance in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, but it certainly continued the downtrend for fans that X-MEN: THE LAST STAND had started.

Now that that is out of the way, we pretty much start in this one where we started way back in X-MEN at least appearance-wise getting back to Wolverine’s old stomping grounds. He is solicited by Yukio (Rila Fukushima who quite literally hasn’t been in much of anything) and decides to go say goodbye to a man he saved from the atomic bombing of Nagasaki (seems very unlikely until they explain later in the film that they were actually just outside the city and apparently across a river) who is now on his death bed. The man offers to take Wolverine's power to heal him so that he can die naturally when he gets older. That is about as far as I will go with the plot, but from the previews, you can probably tell Viper shows up in this one (and is very well portrayed).

This installment in the Wolverine mythos is loaded with great things including finally getting us a Wolverine who isn’t completely indestructible the entire time. I couldn’t wait for a storyline like this and we finally got one. THE WOLVERINE has its well-crafted action sequences, but more than any other time this film has more plot and back story than we are used to seeing.

Yukio is a great addition as pretty much a loyal but sassy little ninja chick that just kicks butt almost every time she shows up. THE WOLVERINE doesn’t make-believe none of the other movies happened either. Set about 4 years after ORIGINS, the film directly refers to the events of THE LAST STAND. The sheer guts of this film to take on fans' criticism and address it head-on is not only brilliant it restores a lot of what’s already gone on in my mind. Still not convinced, watch the credits scene, it should blow your mind if you have been paying attention at all. Admittedly because this takes place in Japan I had the soundtrack to KARATE KID II playing in my head a lot of the movie.

THE WOLVERINE is not without its issues. Famke Janssen reprises her role as Jean Grey but it is not as satisfying as it sounds (okay so maybe that is one issue).

Overall I give this movie a 5 out of 7.
