X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (2016)

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (2016)

Tagline: Prepare for the Apocalypse. (wow, super freakin original)

(Adventure, Action, SciFi) [PG-13]

Mutants: born with extraordinary abilities, and yet still, they are children stumbling in the dark, searching for guidance. A gift can often be a curse. Give someone wings, and they may fly too close to the sun. Give them the power of prophecy, and they may live in fear of the future. Give them the greatest gift of all, powers beyond imagination, and they may think they are meant to rule the world.

In this one, we are now in the 1980’s X-MEN universe where Jean Grey (played by Sophie Turner), Nightcrawler (played by Kodi Smit-McPhee who was in DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and is an amazing actor) and Scott Summers (played by Tye Sheridan best known for READY PLAYER ONE) are now just starting at Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters. All seems well, but the first mutant named En Sabah Nur who has a cult following because some idiots think he is Yahweh, is brought back from the dead and now he’s gonna replace this world with a new one, only his plan sucks because he’s a false god. Can the X-Men prevent him from destroying the world with a plotline basically ripped out of parts of the Bible?

First off, if the real God who is Jesus Christ, comes to judge the earth, there won’t be crap anyone can do about it. However, for the sake of secular movie storylines, just go with this. Overall I freakin love this movie. En Sabah Nur is a really formidable foe. This mutant can literally destroy things and turn them into dust in seconds. He’s got a lot to say, but his powers are seemingly limitless. For the sake of the movie though, he does need a little help, and he gets in the form of Angel (played by Ben Hardy who is not great for this role) who he gives metal freaking wings…epic! Ororo Munroe (played by Alexandra Ship), who eventually becomes Storm, but right now she’s not cool. Psylocke (played by Olivia Munn), she can fight really well and has basically a lightsaber she can conjure at any time and cut pretty much anything to shreds. Finally, he also gets Magneto (played by Michael Fassbender). We find out in this one that when Magneto gets pissed, he can move metal objects (or objects with metal in them) on the other side of the world if he wants. This group means serious business.

We get a lot of returning roles from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, but this one is missing Kitty Pryde who I am guessing will be born later, but somehow Hank (played by Nicholas Hoult) is in this one and is the same age? We also see Col. William Stryker again, but it feels jammed into this storyline just so that we get to see a glimpse of Wolverine, who is not really part of this story. So as per usual, there are some issues with this movie, but nowhere near some of the problems presented in other films.

There is a ton of great cinematography, angles that worked to satisfy the “give me a comic page” fans and the acting is really good aside from the guy playing Angel, that character has always just seemed off for me in the movies. I do like the pacing and the run time fits for this movie.

I give X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
a solid 6 out of 7. For me, this was slightly better than the last installment and probably the best, or second-best in the series.
