URBAN LEGEND (1998)
Tagline: What you don’t
believe, can kill you.
You should check her pulse, she's been like that for years.
In the late 90’s we
started getting a nice batch of really well-done and well-acted “smart horror”
films. URBAN LEGEND in my eyes was way up there on that “this is freakin epic”
list. This one grabbed a little tighter at the nerve endings than some of the
others because it involved actual URBAN LEGENDS. Many of which I heard growing
up, so my relation to the movie itself is pretty high. Much like a lot of other
slasher flicks that came out in the 90’s this one doesn't hold any punches on
the “stars” which include Alicia Witt (88 MINUTES, TWO WEEKS NOTICE), Tara Reid
(SHARKNADO), Joshua Jackson (FRINGE), Danielle Harris (HALLOWEEN, HATCHET,
STAKELAND and like a million other movies), Robert Englund (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Rebecca Gayheart and on and on…
Part of the key to any
great horror flick is a killer beginning. This one doesn’t quite have the
soundtrack I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER does, but it’s got a pretty similar
beginning only creepier. The pace is set for an awesome and quite fun horror
flick that keeps you guessing till the end (just who is it murdering all these
people based on URBAN LEGENDS and the ancient motivator, revenge?) Great
performances, and great storytelling, I just flat-out loved this thing.
1) This isn’t the
Danielle Harris you are used to seeing.
2) At one point in the movie you hear the song “I Don’t Want To Wait” by Paula Cole in the background. It is highly likely the track was added to the film because Joshua Jackson starred in DAWSON’S CREEK, “I Don’t Want To Wait” was the title song for that show.
3) A lot of the darker sets in this give the movie's chase scenes a more campy 80’s horror feel but the result is outstanding. URBAN LEGEND is a great movie on most nights, but it’s a perfect addition to your Halloween movie marathon!
