SHARKNADO (2013)

SHARKNADO (2013)

When I first started watching this I was thinking…man we are in for a 90210 reunion only with sharks. We didn’t really get that and it was only because I could have sworn both Ian and Tara were in that show. Instead, we get one of the most ridiculous ideas for a movie that SYFY has ever come up with. An idea so crazy that it is already a cult hit.

In this movie of course global warming is to blame for bizarre weather in the Hollywood area, but before that, there was already a plan to bring more sharks into the area for meat (or at least I believe that is why we had a shootout intro that had nothing to do with anything).

A bar owner (Fin ha ha) and his co-worker (Nova) plus a friend and a guy who just hangs out there all the time, race to warn Fin’s wife (who is cheating on him) and his daughter about the oncoming storm. Fin is a pretty prepared dude just like his son so the idea of him wanting to get to her fast isn’t all that cheesy I guess. His cheating wife is played by Tara Reid who helped the film's credibility but walked through the role as if she wished they were making another AMERICAN PIE instead. Ian Ziering (90210 and probably better known from ED HARDY BOYZ 2: THE CASE OF WHEN THAT HOT FILIPINA GIRL LOST HER TRAMP STAMP AT MINI-GOLF or even the mega-hit BIKER MICE FROM MARS) is actually trying here and Cassie Scerbo (Nova) appears to realize that this movie is supposed to be just flat out fun as well. I would be lying if I said I don’t want to buy this thing like yesterday. I loved this movie and just about everything about it including the fact that sawing a shark in half in one shot with a giant chainsaw is extremely unlikely.

A few great things about this movie that people may notice but not mention,

1) there are multiple stock footage shots in this which may have just been a budget issue, but actually pays tribute to the old low-budget sci-flicks of the ’40s and ’50s.

2) Robbie the bus driver – just watch. Epic stuff. You want to know what is also un-likely? An actual SHARKNADO, but what is not unlikely at all is a GATORNADO. Apparently, in 1877 there was a report of a tornado dropping half a dozen gators on a farm in South Carolina. In fact, tornadoes pick up all kinds of animals ALL the time including frogs, fish, and even their meat on one occasion (honestly after seeing TWISTER I am not shocked). Anyway, for a trip to the more fun side of horror, SHARKNADO is just what the crazy ridiculous shark movie fans ordered.

I give this movie a I give this one a 5 out of 7.
