THE COSMIC MAN (1959)

THE COSMIC MAN (1959)

Tagline: Ghost creature from space!

(Sci-fi, Thriller, Its Aliens Isn’t It) [G]

Note – This movie was never given an MPAA rating, but it would have definitely been a G.

Anti-gravity? I’ve never heard of a force like that.

In this one, a giant round object lands from outer space. As speculations circulate regarding what it is, the residents in the area start amassing a mob to try and destroy it. The experts investigating what might be going on all have different ideas about what to do as a “Cosmic Man” emerges from the bulbous craft.

First off the pace of this movie is pretty slow after the initial spacecraft appears. If the dialog had more to it, I don’t think it would have felt like it dragged as much as it did, but they're just isn’t a whole lot going on for most of this movie. Some have stated that this is basically a low-budget DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, and there are some similarities, but it doesn’t reach that level. We also have another case where we have a cool but misleading poster to get your attention for this thing.

Acting-wise some of the cast is taking this movie seriously and others were either asked to take a more comedic approach or they just didn’t listen to the director. As a result, the movie feels a bit disjointed at first but as it moves along the acting seems to improve. The movie's only actress with speaking lines is Angela Greene who is famous for playing Dr. Julie Benson in NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST. She is okay in this, but there are a few moments where the script has her screaming over stuff she has either already seen once or really isn’t a huge deal. We also get a lot of Bruce Bennett who was in THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE. He is pretty good in this as-is Walter Maslow who kind of plays his assistant Dr. Rich in this. The most famous face in the movie is John Carradine who actually plays “The Cosmic Man”. I may have mentioned this in previous reviews, but Carradine was in over 350 different roles in everything from THE ICE PIRATES to INVISIBLE INVADERS.

One of my big issues with this movie is the overkill reaction of the humans involved. While we are given some compassionate parts in regards to how they treat “The Cosmic Man” but holy cow, the paranoia level of the government in this is bonkers and feels less than credible, even for those of us that grew up understanding that the government is not your friend. That is all I will say about the plot if you want to check this out. Effects wise the film is very basic, but at least we got a round-looking ship and a semi-transparent shadowy figure of an alien in some parts.

I am not going to say this movie is unwatchable, but it’s barely watchable. As much as I love 1950’s sci-fi I don’t see myself watching this one again. It’s just slightly better than STRANGER FROM VENUS, but it still gets a 2 out of 7.
