BEARRY (2021)

BEARRY (2021)

Tagline: He Loves You Bearry Much.

(Horror, Comedy, Romance) [R]

Note: This movie was never given an MPA rating, but it would have landed an [R]. On streaming services, it’s rated TV-MA.

That is the biggest group of losers I have ever encountered.

In this one, Chloe is going through a divorce and her friend Sam decides to try and cheer her up by getting her a giant teddy bear. It doesn’t take long before murders start happening to some of the men in Chloe’s life. She becomes the suspect as Detectives Seahorn and Clark seek to bring justice to the situation.

First off, this is an 80’s style cheese fest with minimal gore. So if you really want a bunch of that, watch something else. I don’t really like gore, and I love cheesy stuff, so this was right up my alley. I love when they don’t even bother to really try to explain anything and even when they are about to explain something, they just blow it off. Sometimes we just don’t really need to know.

There is a sequence in this where someone is killed and they kind of don’t even address it till like 15 minutes later. The movie is linear, but the writing and flow get janky at times. I am guessing due to budget the effects are also very minimal. This feels like the kind of movie anyone could make, but there are a few decent talents involved.

Acting-wise, we get Vernon Wells (WEIRD SCIENCE) who isn’t given a lot of work but does fine in the role. Felissa Rose (SLEEPAWAY CAMP) shows up as Chloe's annoying friend Sam. She is also pretty solid, as is Sarah French (LAND SHARK) who plays Chloe. I do think this was a better effort from her than her role in LAND SHARK. Thomas Haley shows up as Stephen who is also fine. I haven’t seen any of Thomas’s other films, but both he and Sarah French are also in DESERT MOON. The production made a big deal about the fact that Brooklyn Haley is in this, but I have never seen any of her other films either. They seem to have only cast her to play Sam's daughter so Sam would have someone to boss around.

The kills in this movie are largely off-screen until the latter half of the film. I was kind of expecting that we might not see the killer till it was well into the movie, but nope. They pretty much tell you what is going on right away. I like the touches of comedy in this as well as the fact that the dialog isn’t just everyone dropping F-bombs every 5 seconds. There is also a tad of romance in this, but it’s more playful than pretentious. Fair warning, this isn’t going to be for everyone, but if you like goofy horror, this definitely fits the bill. This movie is not taking itself seriously and you shouldn’t either. We don’t see a lot of teddy bear slashers, but I actually liked this one.

BEARRY gets a 5 out of 7. As I said at the open, horror fans trying to find something super serious or ultra-scary, move along. If you loved the nuttiness of the 80’s independent films or just love horror comedy, this should get a few laughs. I am hoping this turns into a series.
