WEIRD SCIENCE (1985)
Tagline : It's all in the name of science. Weird Science.
(Comedy, Sci-Fi, Romance) [PG-13]
There are movies that are amazing from the 80’s that stand the test of time and others that don’t but are still fantastic. Let’s take a quick look at WEIRD SCIENCE.
In this one two really smart but un-cool teens named Gary Wallace (played by Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt Donnelly (played by Ilan Mitchell-Smith), decide it’s time to just make a woman named Lisa (played by Kelly LeBrock). They use the most ridiculous moronic way ever conceived on film to make one, and she embarks on a journey to not only have a lot of fun, but to boost their confidence. She does this using the worst possible methods you can think of, while the director of this damn thing tries really hard to make us laugh, at stuff that’s not all that funny. The good news for film fans, is that John Hughes at least throws some wild freakin imagination into this movie. It’s also go Kelly LeBrock for Kelly LeBrock fans.
The acting in this flick is actually pretty solid. Everyone from Robert Downey Jr. to Bill Paxton is in this movie, but no one really stands out as being amazing. I did like the fact that they got Suzanne Snyder in this thing. She’s an under-rated actress who hit her stride in the 80’s in movies like KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II. No one however gets as much screen time as Kelly LeBrock who kind of carries this movie. Not because she is scantily-clad for most of the movie, but because the dialog is used as an adolescence defense, and a mediator, all while being part of the problem and the solution. It’s actually a pretty diverse role.
Effects wise this movie is fairly strong but often misguided. Outside of how the two boys create “Lisa”, and there are even a few shots that I know were difficult to pull off at the time. There are also so cool effects near the ending of the movie regarding Bill Paxton’s character. I am not going to say there is anything ground-breaking in the execution of this film, but I can appreciate what they were trying to do in some scenes. We do get a little character development which was welcome.
I wish I had more “good” to say about this movie, but from the point where the two teens involved put bras on their heads I kind of picked up on the fact that we were in for some total nonsense. I don’t mind nonsense in fact I seek it out, but it’s got to have a bit of direction and be funny. This movie isn’t any of that. Outside of a few iconic scenes I can’t really recommend this movie at all. I actually strongly disliked it, which sucks because out of all the movies I have watched recently, this was one of the ones I was most excited to watch.
I have to give WEIRD SCIENCE a 3 out of 7. Giving it anything higher would be sending people down the wrong road. For LeBrock fans this is probably a 5 out of 7, but there wasn’t enough here for me to rate it that high.
