SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983)

SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983)

Tagline: Dear Mom and Dad, I've been at Sleepaway Camp for almost three weeks, now, and I'm getting very scared....

(Horror, Slasher, I Was Not Prepared For That) [R]

If she were any quieter, she'd be dead!

A lot like “Night Of The Creeps” this is yet another 80’s provolone-horror flick that somehow escaped me as kid because it likely wasn’t on cable. This is one, I probably would have watched once or twice tops back then.

What we have here is Angela Baker, a traumatized girl who is sent to summer camp with her cousin (Ricky) who basically just spends a ton of time wanting to put a beat down on anyone who is horrible to her. It doesn’t take long before horror morality kicks in and anyone deemed a jerk, is in for and entry into the “kill count”.
Overall this one plays out almost like a comedy in the sense that the effects are pretty damn practical and pretty fantastic in the campy 80’s grandure. The dialog is laughably terrible. In typical camp slasher fashion, it seems like pretty much everyone that gets killed deserves a good old fashion movie death. Having said that, this thing moves along quite expectedly until that damn ending, WTF. The movie also does a fairly nice job of keeping you guessing who the killer actually is. If you have not seen this movie, and you are a horror fan, maybe just watch it without trying to do any internet searches on the ending first, because just that part makes the movie for horror fans. If you are not one for shocking endings, maybe turn this thing off 5 minutes prior to the credits. It’s one of those things that sticks with you.

There is a reason this movie is regarded as one of the best slasher flicks of the early 80’s, when slasher flicks quite literally grew out of the ground and you could end up seeing 20 of them accidentally.

This movie is NOT for everyone. Low on gore, but high on shock, at least the first time around. I gotta give this one a 4 out of 7, due to the fact that the "re-watchablity" factor for me is low. Even a 4 though gives due credit to what for some is a horror classic.
