WRONG PLACE (2022)

WRONG PLACE (2022)

Tagline: Out here, all that matters is family and justice.

(Action, Thriller, Watch for Deer) [R]

Note: This movie wasn’t given an MPAA rating, so I am going to say it would have been a [R] due to excessive profanity.

In this one Security Officer (and former police captain) Frank, witnesses a murder outside of his place of work. As a result, meth dealers are trying to kill him because they are afraid he will testify against them in court. Getting rid of Frank is going to end up being a lot hard than they ever imagined.

It should be noted that I have ripped on Bruce Willis’s acting for the past few movies he’s been in, but since last year it’s come to light that he has a brain disorder called aphasia, that prevents him from reading, writing, or understanding what others are saying. I have never heard of it, but apparently, it affects more than 2 million people and is more common than some other more well-known afflictions. Having said that, I am NOT going to say anything further about his efforts in the films I review for anything post-2020 moving forward. Bruce is no longer acting at the moment but he still had 11 movies wrapping just in 2022. So a few of those are definitely going to pop up in my reviews. My apologies to Bruce Willis and his family and I wish them all the best. I have been a Bruce Willis fan for as long as I can remember and he has a place in my heart for entertaining me and my loved ones for decades.

Production wise this feels like a made-for-TV movie with a lower than $0.00 budget. That doesn’t mean that all of the acting is bad or that the talent they brought in wasn’t decent. Texas Battle (yes, that is his name) has a great role in this and just his interaction with Frank is pretty solid as Captain East. He’s my favorite character in the movie. Battle has been in 4 Bruce Willis movies recently but it is probably best known for playing Lewis in FINAL DESTINATION 3. We also get Massi Furlan as Virgil. Furlan is good in this role and has had over 74 acting projects to date. He has been in several big movies including JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. We also get Ashley Greene who is most famous for her role as Alice Cullen in the TWILIGHT saga. I don’t know if Greene’s career has gone the way she wanted it to, but I do remember her being in this really crappy movie BURYING THE EX. She does show range in this flick so I really had no issue with her acting at all.

Probably my favorite scene in this movie is a short little bit where Captain East is on his way to Frank’s house and he’s talking to himself. It reminds me of one of the scenes in MAMMOTH where Jack’s father is driving to his house late for Jack’s birthday party. Yeah, Jack in the movie MAMMOTH is played by Summer Glau, I don’t know why the writers gave her a dude’s name. This thing is not without its issue though. There is a scene where Chloe is fighting an assailant and takes time to gloat during the fight. If you are going to gloat when someone is trying to kill you, you had better be damn sure you ended that person.

Directorially there are some interesting choices and I actually liked the score quite a bit. I do wish there was more consistency. If you are going to do some cool stuff in some shots, why not just do that same cool thing in as many shots as you can. Stuff like this makes it seem like the second half of the movie had a completely different director from the first half. I definitely would have cut the final scene on the dock, that was too much cheese even for this movie.

Overall this is quite a bit better than the last 2 Bruce Willis movies I reviewed, but the best I can give it is a 4 out of 7. Most people probably won’t have as much fun with the balance of humor and drama that I did, but I did not expect to see DIE HARD and I thought it was pretty good.
