MAMMOTH (2006)
Tagline : We hunted it
into extinction…now it’s hunting us.
It’s not like SyFy was
trying back in 2006 when MAMMOTH came out. Oddly expecting total crap I wound
up getting one of my favorite B-movies
of all time. No, no, I am not joking. Summer Glau (Firefly) stars in this
surprisingly well written and entertaining ride. Not without its overdose of cheese
the movie centers around the family of Dr. Abernathy who is trying to find a
wholly mammoth brought to life by a space meteorite. If that isn’t a hook
enough they are being assisted by what is essentially a female man in black and
accompanied by Louisiana local police which merely adds to the films
entertainment.
Jammed with antidotes to
sci fi films itself this sci fi film is a largely forgotten an unwatched treat
that really should have gotten more attention than it did. Vincent Ventresca does a superb job in this
one as Jacks father (played by Summer Glau). He does not do as good a job as
the father in FLYING MONKEYS which came out last year sadly.
This movie has a re-animated hand (which strangely actually ties the film together), a giant horrible cgi mammoth and a generally dry sense of humor making this movie is not only worth your time. It is worth buying if you can find it. Things to watch for 1)Tom Skerritt, 2)Leila Arcieri 3)The opening setting the tone for the movie, 4)The party scene, it’s kinda odd. 5)The scene with the re-animated hand and the final credits. Not only the scene during them, but reading them. 6)Summer Glau for Summer Glau fans.
