WEDNESDAY: SEASON 1 CHAPTER 7 – IF YOU DON’T WOE ME BY NOW

WEDNESDAY

SEASON 1 CHAPTER 7 – IF YOU DON’T WOE ME BY NOW

In this chapter, Wednesday’s Uncle Fester shows up and is familiar with the kind of creature that Wednesday is looking for. Wednesday draws conclusions as to who the murderer is and lays out her case in front of the accused but isn’t fully satisfied with her conclusion. It doesn’t take long before Uncle Fester and Wednesday decide to track their suspicions in a hilarious “Penny’s Pooch Patrol” motorcycle and sidecar.

Acting wise the only new character introduced in this episode is Uncle Fester played by Fred Armisen (THE BUBBLE). He is actually pretty good in this, but I still feel like the casting could have been better for this role.

One thing that stood out about this episode is that we get yet another side of Wednesday as the emotions get packed into this thing. It’s hard for me to admit that the most emotional I got in this entire series was over a character that doesn’t even talk. Well, actually maybe that is the reason I got emotional. This is also the only episode that I recall where Wednesday actually sheds a tear.

Best Line: “I’m not friend material let alone more than friend material, I will ignore, stomp on your heart and always put my needs and interests first.” - Wednesday

Second Best Line: “The dead can be just as annoying and unreliable as the living” - Wednesday

Third Best Line: “I love funerals; I’ve been crashing them ever since I was old enough to read the obituary section.” - Wednesday

Fact – Uncle Fester can conjure up an electrical charge at will.

Fact 2 – “Thing” is a master safe cracker.

Fact 3 – In this series, a Hyde can be unlocked through chemical inducement or hypnosis. This is also the case in most films involving Dr. Jekyll. A high-profile example is the film LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN.

Oddity –  In one scene Tyler says that Wednesday “owes” him a date. I found this kind of odd. The other thing is that the last episode was called “Quid Pro Woe” which is a reference to quid pro quo which has the idea of you doing something for me and me doing something for you as part of an agreement. However, the term “quid pro quo” wasn’t used in the last episode. It ended up getting mentioned in this one.

The subtle touches in this episode are ripe with how much thought went into this series. It opens at a funeral where the daughter and son of the departed are the only ones that don’t have an umbrella in the pouring rain. It seems as if the director wanted that visual to show that when a loved one dies, you can be in so much misery, that even being dry and out of the rain is an afterthought. We also see some of the staff reaching out to Wednesday in this episode which is more helpful way than usual. We also see some unexpected allies come to Wednesday’s side. This is also the episode where we find out that being smart and aggressive doesn’t always make you right.

This episode is a 5 out of 7 for me. Most of it is great, but Uncle Fester feels shoehorned into the episode rather than being part of a natural progression. This episode also commits a few “Season 1” sins when it comes to the consequences. Consequences are always good, but killing off key characters too early can turn off fans that might have been watching to see those characters develop.
