THE BUBBLE (2022)

THE BUBBLE (2022)

Tagline: Where Will You Be When Disaster Strikes?

(Comedy, Action, Dumb People Doing Dumb Things) [R]

Don't listen to anything they say; they're liars. They literally lie for a living. That's their literal job.

In this one, we get the adventures of a group of actors and actresses trying to finish a film called “Cliff Beasts 6: The Battle for Everest: Memories of the Requiem” during the Covid 19 outbreak of 2020.

First off, this movie is meant as a comedy and actually hits on comedy more than a lot of other so-called comedies that came out in 2022. In regards to actual comedy, this has been one of the roughest years I can remember outside of 2020, which was just a full-blown dumpster fire when it came to laughter in general.

What worked for this movie was the last 25 minutes or so, because at least then you knew it was coming to an end. We also get a few funny movies that are bogged down by drug use or sex stuff that didn’t make any damn sense or bring anything of value to the film. Cinematically this thing is actually okay. We get some pretty cool effects regarding CGI for the film they are making within the film and to be honest, I wouldn’t mind watching a series called CLIFF BEASTS if they ever made one. I also did enjoy some of the jabs at overall movie making when it comes to CGI use in general. The only 2 people I could stand in this whole thing were Cyril and Tip (the two motion capture guys).

Acting wise the most notable talents are Keegan-Michael Key as Sean Knox, Pedro Pascal as Dieter Bravo, Fred Armisen as Darren Eigen (ANCHORMAN), and Karen Gillan (best known for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) as Carol Cobb. I really want to like all of these actors and actresses involved in this, but the way this movie comes across, it is almost like an attempt to get fans of theirs to unfollow their social media accounts and burn all the movies they own on DVD or BLU RAY with these people in it, in a trash can in the alley.

What didn’t work was just about every line that was given to Pedro Pascal. It feels like Pedro got asked if he wanted to play the dumbest most annoying character in comedy history and he just said, ”sure, I am bored”. I can’t stand his character Dieter Bravo in this. We are also supposed to sort of be rooting for Carol Cobb in this (played by Karen Gillan) but by the end of this movie, there aren’t any characters left to like. Everyone, (and I mean everyone) sucks. So even what little humor we do get is drowning in characters we would love to never see again. I can say that where I live in AZ, for most of us and definitely in some towns like Payson and Lake Havasu, it was as if the "Covid pandemic" never even happened. I saw maybe half the people in each city wearing masks, but almost nothing else changed. So at this point, all the way in 2022, this movie doesn't feel nearly as "too soon" as 2020's SONGBIRD.

I know I am beating a dead horse with this one on the characters, but I did not hate this thing as much as some of the other films that have come out this year. Overall I have to give this thing a 2 out of 7. If they had made even 1 of these main characters likable, then we might have had something to work with. Instead, we got this freakin thing.
