AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981)

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981)

Tagline: A masterpiece of terror

(Horror, Comedy, Blue Moon) [R]

Whereas I am a victim of your carnivorous lunar activities.

Two American dudes on a walk around at night tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf after leaving a pub (The Slaughtered Lamb) in the middle of the night despite really obvious warnings to stay on the road, that advice gets ditched like before the next scene even comes up. The pub members know something is up, but decide not to go help the two Americans because if they did, we wouldn’t have much of a movie now would we.

The legendary- David Naughton (as David) does a fantastic job as our lead victim, who is just slightly more fortunate than his friend Jack (at least at first). We also get Jenny Agutter who I also mentioned was awesome in CHILD’S PLAY 2. This thing is loaded with CRAZY CRAZY visions and dream sequences (werewolf nightmares) that are just mind-blowing. The transformation effects in this movie are so good, they set a standard that NO OTHER WEREWOLF movie has even come close to touching outside of maybe parts of THE HOWLING. I loved the effects in this movie so much that I used still it for a study on the transformations I use in my own comic ANGELWOLF.

The ridiculous. This isn’t a straight-up horror flick. While we get plenty of gore, a lot of it comes laced with dry British humor making the movie all that more enjoyable. I am not going to say this thing isn’t freakin bizarre (monster soldiers shooting up your house and killing the nurse for no apparent reason). It is on so many levels. However, the balance in almost every aspect from acting to script to a practical assault on all of its effects excellence, puts this move light years ahead of its time.

Please note, that I would not have been glad to see Jack either.

This thing gets a 6 out of 7. Some of the dialogue is shaky.
