THE HOWLING (1981)

THE HOWLING (1981)

Tagline: When the howling starts... the horror begins!

(Horror, Creepy Neighbors, Werewolf Central) [PG-13]

So if you read my reviews you will know that AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON is my 2nd favorite werewolf movie of all time. This movie came out the same year and it is #1. In this one a newscaster who will do anything to get a story follows a suspected serial killer into a porn shop (tacky with an even tackier movie within the movie involved) to capture him once and for all. What she discovers is so horrifying she basically has a meltdown and has to go take a vacation with her husband to get over it. The problem is…as the story unfolds we find they are clearly in werewolf central with a bunch of raw meat eaters.

While there are parts of this movie where the legendary Dee Wallace does seem to be trending backward in the acting department, there are other scenes that give you the chills. The effects in this in my opinion out shine even AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and the werewolves are basically the blue print on how to make your werewolves look to this day. In fact, if you haven’t studied this movie and you are trying to make a werewolf flick you wasting your fans money, your money, their time and your time. It is that serious of an offense.

The stupid – Okay okay, this movie is going to get a 7 out of 7 but let’s be real for just a moment. Both this movie and WEREWOLF IN LONDON are guilty of throwing in porn shops. I am not sure if they couldn’t pay the actresses enough at the time, or if it was a cheap way to push the envelope. In any case, it was completely un-necessary and ads NOTHING to the film.

The EPIC – I mentioned the effects in this film but even by today’s standards this puppy is just flat out incredible. Unlike the movie in my #2 spot of best werewolf movies of all time, this one get’s it’s bubble on…you actually feel like these people are basically boiling into werewolves. Stunning stuff. I also have to give high marks to Dennis Dugan (HAPPY GILMORE, GROWN UPS) who does a pretty superb job in this as our unlikely hero. Well, as hero as it gets when you are in a community run by werewolves trying to turn you into one of them or kill you.

Overall this gets a 7 out of 7. There are a few flaws, but not enough to knock it down to a 6.
