WEDNESDAY

SEASON 1 CHAPTER 6 – QUID PRO WOE

In this chapter, Wednesday’s friends throw her a surprise 16th birthday party spawned Enid, but Wednesday is having none of it. She’d rather solve the murders going on a Nevermore. Meanwhile, Bianca attempts to nudge a “normie” away from the Morning Song Cult. Finally, Wednesday goes on a date but with her own intentions for the evening ahead. What does the Gates family have to do with all of this?

One interesting thing I found in this episode was a short but pointed shot at “whitewashing the sins of our past”, because apparently someday that is going to come back to kill us all. It’s a clear shot at America’s founding as if we can shame ourselves so hardcore that we travel back in time to talk America into existence. While the sentiment is taken, quite honestly no nation was born without blood it’s one of the side effects of living in a fallen world. To constantly bash the way America was formed is like looking steadily at a rearview mirror and promptly smashing into the vehicle in front of you. We can learn from history, but the fixed glance is poisonous. At some point, you have to take the lessons of not only America’s history, but the rest of the world’s and move forward.

What was great about this episode is that we got to see a kinder side of one of the characters they seemed to be trying to set up as a villain in previous chapters. There are also some philosophical elements in this one like the idea that no man chooses evil because it is evil. He only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks. It’s one of those sayings that probably applies to most people on a surface level, but in actuality, people do evil because it is evil all the time. What is good is temporally defined by our experiences and input. Most often that input is not of God and when we take our own understanding of the matter, we fail all too often because what “we” think is good and what God tells us is good are in opposition. When I say God here, I am not talking about just any god. I am talking about the God of the Bible. The author of both truth and goodness. We always seek reasons for every infraction. I think that is human nature. However, when you start messing around with sin and evil. It has no good for you. It is literally just “evil”. There is nothing actually “good” about it in spite of our flawed perceptions.

Best Line: “You seriously want to split up, in here, that’s literally how every best friend dies in a horror movie.” - Enid

Second Best Line: “I don’t bury hatchets, I sharpen them.” - Wednesday

Third Best Line: “I haven’t always been against birthdays. Each one reminds me I am a year closer to death's cold embrace. What’s not to like about that?” - Wednesday

Fact – Mayor Noble Walker used to be the town Sheriff.

Fact 2 – Wednesday has a laptop available to her, but prefers to write her novel on a typewriter.

Oddity – Can't really find anything out of place in this chapter. It's very well crafted.

This chapter also kind of shows us a darker side of Wednesday where if she can’t get you to shun her, she really doesn’t mind putting you in danger. I mean, with friends like her, what more could you ask for. The pacing here is pretty brilliant and every scene feels necessary even if it only really serves as a layup for self-loathing liberal arts students or contrary exposition in this review.

This is by far Enid’s best episode so far in the series. There is one line in this chapter where I felt they were just trying to follow up on her angst from the last chapter, but aside from that, she sticks up for herself while also being an amazing friend. It also corrects an issue I had from an earlier chapter. Wednesday is no longer talking to herself. We are instead hearing inner monologs by way of narration.

This episode is very solid and quite honestly it’s the first 7 out of 7 in the series. It is the first episode where I felt the series accomplished getting us emotionally connected to the characters. Even if some of that was embracing Wednesday through her flaws. It also allowed for some teaching moments and I am never going to apologize for sharing truths.
