DEEP BLOOD (1990)

DEEP BLOOD (1990)

Tagline: Nope.

(Adventure, Horror, Run Of The Mill Shark Curses) [PG]

This movie wasn’t given an MPAA rating, but it likely would have been a PG.

In this one, we are told a tale of an ancient Native American evil that wants revenge. Clearly, when you want revenge, you come in the form of a shark. Now there is a small beach community in the area and too many snotty teenagers, so it’s deep blood time.

All kidding aside this movie is just terrible. Most of the shark footage is actually from National Geographic and while they did actually craft an animatronic shark head, it’s hardly utilized. Even though this thing came out in 1990 it feels like and has the pace of a late ’70s or ’80s movie. The campiness is out of control. I think this might have been trying to capitalize on JAWS THE REVENGE released in 1987 which is weird because that movie was pretty bad (I gave it a 3 out of 7). There are some plot points that are similar, but the most obvious is a devious shark bent on revenge. There aren’t just sharks doing shark stuff apparently.

Touching on the acting a bit, I did recognize one name, Cort McCown. He plays a character named Allan and he’s just okay. McCown was in several 80s movies including CAN’T BUY ME LOVE and TEEN WOLF. Outside of that, I really don’t recognize anyone else in this. Sadly the acting is also all pretty bad. It feels like the first time a lot of these lines were ever read was when they started filming. Zero practice or anything like that.

I guess if you just really want to watch a really ridiculous Italian JAWS rip-off, then watching people that are supposed to be in the ocean swim in fish tanks, then this does provide at least some level of humor when watched from a certain perspective. If you go into this expecting a good shark movie, then you will be let down. There is a reason that DEEP BLOOD doesn’t come up in shark movie conversations, ever.

If I had to point out some positives, at least this movie doesn’t feature any bad CGI. They also managed to get quite a few extras which help make this movie feel less like a lot of CGI-driven films that come across as being filmed in a garage or someone’s backyard. It also does have some nostalgia for me as a kid that grew up in the 80s. One other thing is that they at least try to throw in a little plot that isn’t just a shark attack story.

Overall I can’t recommend this thing at all, so if you do watch it and feel like you just wasted 94 minutes of your life, don’t blame this guy. DEEP BLOOD gets a 2 out of 7.
